Who Still Gets Free Bags?
Heads up, Southwest travelers! Southwest Airlines just rolled out a new baggage policy — and for many travelers, that means no more free checked bags.
After May 28th, these travelers will still get 2 free checked bags:
- Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members
- Customers flying on Business Select fares
These travelers will receive 1 free checked bag:
- Rapid Rewards A-List Members
- Other select customers
- Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers (credited after travel)
Everyone else will pay for their 1st and 2nd checked bags — with 3rd and 4th bags still carrying the usual fees. These changes apply to flights booked on or after May 28, 2025.
More Fare Changes Coming Soon
Southwest is also updating its fare bundles in phases, giving travelers more flexibility (and potentially more savings) depending on what you’re looking for in a ticket.
Phase 1 (Now Live): Rapid Rewards earning is now increased for Business Select fares and lowered for Wanna Get Away/Plus fares. They’re also adjusting point redemption rates depending on travel demand.
Phase 2 (Now Live): A new Basic Fare will be introduced — their lowest price option, but with fewer perks and flexibility. They’ll also begin applying expiration dates to flight credits, based on the fare type purchased.
Looking ahead: Southwest says these changes are part of a long-term strategy to enhance the customer experience, boost performance, and create value for travelers and shareholders alike.
What else might be coming in the next year or so?
- Assigned seating to match customer preferences
- Premium seat upgrades to increase options and revenue
- Redesigned boarding process and cabin layout
- Redeemable red-eye flights for expanded travel flexibility
