Updates to the Southwest Checked Baggage Policy
Heads up! Starting May 28th, Southwest Airlines will charge customers to check bags. That means no more free checked bags like they've offered for years, unless you're one of the following members or customers…
These customers will be able to check 2 bags for free –
- Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members
- Customers traveling on Business Select fares
These customers will be able to check 1 bag for free –
- A-List Members
- Other select customers
- Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers (Southwest will credit one checked bag)
All remaining customers will pay to check their first and second bags, and we will continue to charge for the third and fourth checked bags. Changes will apply to flights booked on or after May 28, 2025.
They're also updating the benefits of the fares bundles in phases. Whether you’re looking for a lower price with fewer perks, or more benefits for added flexibility, you’ll have the choice to pick what works best for your trip.
Phase 1: Beginning this month (March 2025), they increased the Rapid Rewards earn ratio on Business Select fares and lowered the earn ratio on our Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares. They will also begin to vary the redemption rates across their fare products on some high- and low-demand travel periods.
Phase 2: Beginning May 28, Southwest will introduce a new Basic fare. This new Basic fare will be their lowest price point and will have less flexibility than other fares. Additionally, they will be adding expiration dates to their Flight Credits, which will vary based on which fare you choose to purchase.
Also, just a heads up that Southwest Airlines is making several other new changes by 2026, with hopes to elevate the customer experience, improve financial performance, and drive shareholder value.
Here are other possible changes to expect in the coming months –
- Assign seats to meet customer preferences.
- Offer premium seating options to increase revenue opportunities.
- Redesign the boarding model including product designs, cabin layout, timing, & more.
- Introduce redeye flights for sale to further optimize the network and increase aircraft utilization.
