Love cute hair clips but need to stick to a budget? These DIY holiday hair clips are so easy to make and totally budget-friendly!
DIY Holiday Hair Clips
PPP contributor, Hannah, here! I have three daughters and a lot of themed school days coming up this time of year! Between “dress up like an elf day”, “ugly sweater day”, and “wear your favorite Christmas jammies”, we have a lot of fun outfits to plan for! My girls love adding holiday earrings and adorable accessories to go with their themed costumes but store-bought hair clips can get SO pricey (especially with THREE girls!). I am so happy I found these DIY holiday hair clips because they are way cuter than buying pre-made clips, and a fraction of the cost.
I'm giving you the ins and outs of how to make these Christmas hair clips yourself. You don’t need a bunch of supplies or equipment for this project and it takes just a few minutes to make a custom set for your kiddos.
These also make wonderful gifts if you have girls in your life, or find some more grown-up options for the fun teachers or babysitters during the Christmas season.
Here's how to make these adorable DY holiday hair clips!
These clips would make such cute stocking stuffers. Here's some other ideas for Girls Stocking Stuffers – all under $10!
What do you need to make your own hair clips?
Have you ever wandered through Hobby Lobby around a holiday and seen the huge assortment of little themed thingamabobs and thought “those are so cute, but what on Earth do I do with them?” and strolled on past? Well, here's your answer!
Grab an assortment of these mini Christmas ornaments (they usually have these in free-standing displays near the rest of the craft supplies) and whatever festive scrapbooking supplies, gift tags, or beads you can find.
Then head over to the jewelry department to grab alligator clips. I used a larger size and a smaller size so we've got different hair style options.
You'll also need a hot glue gun for this project.
- Mini Christmas ornaments
- Christmas paper craft supplies
- Large alligator clips
- Small alligator clips
- Hot glue gun
How to make DIY Holiday Hair Clips
Once you have your supplies in hand, this craft is crazy easy. Just glue your little trinkets to the long, flat part of the alligator clip – and repeat!
Some of these mini ornaments had ribbon or other clips for hanging on a tree which I carefully cut off with scissors.
One tip you might consider: make sure to glue some clips horizontally as well as vertically for some variety for when you put them in your girls' hair. For example, the horizontal clips work best when you are putting the clips in front of pigtails!
Is it cheaper to make your own hair clips?
Because these are so cute and customized, buying these clips pre-made from the store would be way out of our price range. I've seen some adorable options out there but get total sticker shock and leave empty handed (or an online cart abandoned 😉 ).
So, here's a breakdown of the cost to make these at home. My girls' favorite set so far are the puffy reindeer and Santa so I'll use those as an example!
(Note: all the Christmas items were 50% off when I shopped – make sure to wait for these to be on sale like this to maximize your budget!)
Reindeer & Santa clips: $2.99 for 4 pieces ($1.50 per clip set)
Alligator clips: $1.99 for a pack of 15 (about $.26 cents per clip set – make sure to grab these when they're on sale, too)
Total cost: $1.76 per set of 2 clips!
Waaay cheaper than buying hair clips at the store – and higher quality, in my opinion!
Now that I've made these adorable Christmas clips, I can't wait to keep my eye out for upcoming holidays like Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and more! You'll likely never see my girls without a custom hair clip from here on out. 😂
