What do you need to make Buffalo Chicken Dip?
- buffalo sauce / hot sauce (We recommend Frank's hot sauce)
- shredded, cooked chicken
- cream cheese
- ranch dressing
You KNOW this is going to be good when you see cream cheese as an ingredient. 🙂
Can you use canned chicken in buffalo chicken dip? Absolutely!
You can definitely use canned chicken for this buffalo chicken dip – and many people do because it's a little softer and easier to scoop. But I just find that cooked or rotisserie chicken just has a better flavor. It's totally up to you!
Here's how to make Buffalo Chicken Dip in the oven (crockpot directions are below!):
- Mix all the ingredients in a baking dish (you'll need shredded chicken, cream cheese, hot sauce, ranch dressing and shredded cheddar cheese)
- Pop it in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes
- Pull it out of the oven and serve with chips!
How to make crockpot buffalo chicken dip:
If you don't want to use the oven – you don't have to!
Buffalo Chicken Dip is the PERFECT appetizer to make in your crockpot. Plus, it's one less thing you have to be actively worrying about while getting ready for guests.
To start, combine cooked chicken, cream cheese, hot sauce, ranch dressing and shredded cheddar cheese in your slow cooker and stir together.
Cover with the lid and cook on LOW for 3-4 hours or on HIGH for 1-2 hours.
Give it a good stir every 30 minutes. When the cheese is fully melted and you no longer see chunks of cream cheese you'll know the buffalo chicken dip is ready.
Serve with Frito's scoops, tortilla chips, crackers or veggies.
What can I serve with buffalo chicken dip?
Traditionally buffalo chicken dip is served with cut up veggies such as celery, bell peppers, carrots and cucumbers. Any of those crunchy veggies will do. Frito's, tortilla chips and crackers are also yummy. Or you can sit there and eat it with a spoon right out of the dish!
Here are a few appetizers that will pair wonderfully with this recipe for a full snack buffet:
Why is my buffalo chicken dip greasy? Did I do something wrong?
More than likely it's from overcooking. The oil from the cheese can separate if the dip is overcooked. So go ahead and set a timer so you can avoid that mess all together. That would be a sad, sad day if you had to toss all that yummy, buffalo chicken dip goodness.
Can I freeze leftover buffalo chicken dip?
I was wondering this and thought you might be wondering the same thing. The answer is yes, but keep in mind that cream cheese doesn't really freeze the best and will tend to get a funky texture. However, if it's either toss leftovers or freeze then go ahead and freeze it.

Yes, blue cheese, but for those of us that do not like blue cheese, I am so glad it works just as well with ranch dressing.
Mandy says
We ALWAYS use Ranch! Great alternative for those who don’t like blue cheese!!
Tracy says
I don’t like bleu cheese, so yes although original I’ll try it with the ranch
Karyn says
I have a silly question. How do you cook your chicken for this dish? I assume on the stove but with seasonings and for how long? Thanks so much.
Laurie says
I usually cook mine in the slow cooker for a whole chicken using this recipe – https://passionatepennypincher.com/2011/06/whats-in-the-slow-cooker-rotisserie-style-chicken/
If I don’t use that (and I’m in a hurry!), I just boil it on the chicken in a few cups of water (I don’t add any seasonings.) Hope that helps Karyn!
