How to make Christmas Hot Chocolate Bombs:
Grab your supplies – you only need 3 items for the food portion of these:
- melting chocolate
- mini marshmallows
- hot chocolate mix
1. Melt the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl by microwaving in 15 second intervals and stirring until the chocolate is melted and pourable. Or you can temper the chocolate by melting it over water with a double boiler.
2. Pour a couple of tablespoons of melted chocolate into the mold and use the back of a spoon to push the melted chocolate around the molds. Go behind this with a pastry brush or food safe paint brush and brush up the mold to make sure the edges and all along the mold are completely covered.
3. Place the mold on a baking sheet and put in the freezer for 7-10 minutes or the refrigerator about 30 minutes. Carefully remove the chocolate from the molds by placing your fingers underneath the mold and pushing it out. Remove to a cold plate and set aside.
4. Heat a skillet until warm. Take one chocolate sphere and place it in the skillet for a couple of seconds until the edges melt and are even. Quickly add a tablespoon or more hot chocolate mix and a few mini marshmallows.
5. Take another sphere and repeat the process in the skillet. Connect the two spheres together and hold until sealed. Repeat with remaining spheres.
6. To serve, place in a mug and pour 1 cup warmed milk over and watch all the happiness occur. Give it a stir and enjoy all the chocolatey goodness!
7. Store hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container in a cool place.

Notes
What is a hot chocolate bomb?
Hot chocolate bombs are the cutest ever balls of chocolate that are filled with hot chocolate mix and marshmallows. When you put them in a mug and pour hot milk over them they explode with yummy~chocolatey~marshmallow goodness!
These became viral on TikTok and soon became all the rage this year. So much so that bakeries and eateries are selling them for $5 and up a ball. With that price tag I knew we wanted to figure out how to make these.
How do you add marshmallows inside of hot chocolate bombs?
My Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix works perfect in the hot chocolate bombs. I also used some mini marshmallows and these fun dehydrated mini marshmallows (they are like the kind you find in Lucky Charms cereal). All you have to do is sprinkle a tablespoon or two hot chocolate mix into half of a chocolate sphere and top with a few marshmallows.
Where can you buy silicone molds?
The best mold to use is a semi sphere silicone mold. These make it super easy to push and pop the chocolate out. I like to use ones that are at least 2 inches in diameter. The ones I used were 2.5 inches.
I searched my local Hobby Lobby and Michaels without any luck but found several on Amazon. These silicone molds worked great for me.
What if I don’t have a silicone mold?
You can still make chocolate bombs without a mold. You can wrap eggs or a small ball in plastic wrap, dip them in the melted chocolate and let them harden. They won’t end up completely round, but it will work in a pinch.
This Hot Chocolate Bomb Recipe is perfect for gifts too! These cupcake boxes work great for gift boxes and are so, so cute. 🙂
What flavors are good to use in hot chocolate bombs?
There are so many flavor combinations to be made!
- Chocolate: Use dark or milk chocolate.
- White Hot Chocolate Bombs: Use white melting wafers, almond bark or white chocolate chips.
- Peppermint: Add in a tablespoon of crushed peppermint candy. Garnish with crushed peppermint too!
- Mocha: Add 1 teaspoon instant coffee granules.
- Peanut Butter: Add a bit of creamy peanut butter or cut up Reese’s cups. Garnish with half a Reese’s cup.
- Cookies and Cream: Add 1 crushed up Oreo cookie. Garnish with an Oreo!
- Creme de’ Menthe: Use green melting wafers and add 2 crushed Ande’s mints. Garnish with an Andes mint.
- Funfetti: Use funfetti white chocolate chips.
- Salted Caramel: Use caramel melting wafers and sprinkle with pink Himalayan salt.
- Chai Tea: Use white melting wafers and fill with chai tea mix and mini marshmallows.
- Melting Snowman: Use white melting wafers and put a face on your hot chocolate bomb using black and orange icing. Watch him melt as you pour warm milk over the top!
So many ideas, so little time 🙂

I was just wondering if sugar free hot chocolate would work the same. My fiance and I are both diabetic.
The st patty’s theme doesn’t have hor cocoa mix in the recipe, is that on purpose? Di you only use white chocolate and marshmallows? Thank you 🙂
Yes Emilee! This particular recipe was made using a higher quality chocolate which will melt nicely into milk – but if you would like to use a lower quality inexpensive chocolate you might want to fill it with cocoa like normal 🙂
