THE BEST Homemade Brownie Mix
Oh boy, do we have a treat for you today! I've tested a few homemade brownie mix recipes recently to find one that deserves to be shared and put into your regular rotation. This……is…..the……one!!!
This is a great mix to whip up and keep on hand and will be a recipe you turn to over and over again. It's also PERFECT to place in a nice glass jar to gift!
Ingredients needed:
- unsweetened cocoa powder
- sugar
- powdered sugar
- salt
- all purpose flour
- semi-sweet chocolate chips
- eggs
- vegetable or canola oil
- water
- pure vanilla extract
Here's how to make homemade brownie mix:
1. In a large bowl, combine cocoa powder, sugars, salt, flour and chocolate chips.
2. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.
3. When ready to make, preheat oven to 350. Line a 9×9 square pain with foil or parchment paper, leaving about a 2 inch overhang on two sides. This will allow you to lift the whole tray of brownies straight out of the pan.
4. Empty dry brownie mix into a large bowl and add eggs, vegetable oil, water and vanilla extract. Stir with a rubber spatula to combine (mixture will be very thick).
5. Pour brownie batter into prepared dish; smooth top. Bake 25-35 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
6. Remove from oven and place on a cooling rack. Let cool about 15 minutes and then gently lift brownies out of pan back onto the cooling rack.
7. Cool completely before cutting into squares.
This recipe Yields 12 large squares or 24 mini squares and is 324 calories per large square. This homemade brownie mix can be stored with the dry ingredients in a ziploc bag or in a glass container. It's also super fun to prepare as a gift for all occasions!
TIP: you can also add in 2 teaspoons espresso powder for an even more intense flavor!
Sooooo yummy!!! 😍😍😍
If you want a twist on the flavors, you can also add in peanut butter or butterscotch chips. So many brownie creations just waiting to be discovered with this homemade brownie mix! 🙂
If your family all loves the edges of the brownies best, you can grab this Wilton Baking Pan at Amazon to make individual squares. That way you could even customize some with peanut butter, some regular, and some with butterscotch (or maybe peppermint – yum!).

Hi Leo – If doubling the recipe, I recommend doubling the cooking time as well since it’s more that has to cook. I hope this helps!

Hi Jennifer, I can’t say for sure since it doesn’t last long around here, ha, but in an air tight container I would say up to 3 months or so! Hope that helps!

what if you dont have powdered sugar?
Karen T says
You can make “super-fine” sugar if you put your regular granulated sugar in a food processor or high-powered blender. Not sure what the ratio would be though. Sorry, don’t know if that was helpful or not!
Aubrey says
Powdered sugar includes corn starch, so it acts as a thickener. I would suggest you add a tablespoon of cornstarch with your granulated sugar, if you don’t have any powdered sugar.
Cheree' says
Hi Nany – you can, but I wouldn’t go less than 1 cup of the regular sugar. 🙂
Nany says
Can we use less sugar and if so how much less would it be
