This easy homemade cool whip recipe uses just 3 ingredients. It's perfect to use with your favorite recipes, and it's SO GOOD! Give it a try! It's truly more of a whole foods substitute for Cool Whip (and is an easy fast way to make real whipping cream at home). If you've been cooking forever I'm sure you've made this before as whipping cream, but not everyone knows this alternative to cool whip so hopefully it helps a few folks (like my kids who haven't learned that much about cooking yet!)
Homemade Cool Whip – Just 3 Ingredients!
Did you know that you can make homemade whipped topping with just 3 simple ingredients? I had no idea Cool Whip is so easy to make yourself rather than buying it!
This homemade cool whip recipe is perfect because you know exactly what is going into it. You can also easily use organic products too (if you prefer).
This will save so much time and money making it yourself. I absolutely love the taste and can tell a huge difference than buying the store bought cool whip.
TIP: Sam's or Costco by far is the cheapest place to grab heavy whipping cream 🙂
Ingredients for homemade whipped cream:Â Â
- heavy whipping cream
- sugar
- vanilla
How to make Homemade Cool Whip:
Add 1 cup of heavy whipping cream, 1/4 cup of sugar and 1 tsp of vanilla to your mixer. I like to use my Kitchenaid stand mixer with the whisk attachment. Start your mixer on slow for a few seconds, and then gradually turn the settings up to medium high. Whisk the topping until foamy with stiff peaks (the consistency of cool whip).
If you don't have a stand mixer, you can use an electric mixer. You'll just want to mix on medium high for about 5 minutes or until soft peaks form.
You can use this whipped cream recipe right away or you can freeze in old cool whip containers. Really, any freezable container will be just fine!

Can I substitute homemade whipped cream for Cool Whip in a recipe?
Absolutely! Using the homemade cool whip substitute allows you to 100% control the ingredients (and it's pretty fun to make too!). Note that unless you stabilize your homemade Cool Whip, you'll need to use this the same day. If you stabilize the whipping cream, you can use it for up to 4 days.
How do you stabilize homemade whipped cream?
It's pretty simple to stabilize homemade whipping cream – simply add one more ingredient! Before you whip your heavy whipping cream in your mixer, add 1 Tablespoon of confectioners' sugar. If you feel it needs more stabilizing, add a tablespoon of cornstarch to the confectioners' sugar.

This is not cool whip. It’s whipped cream.
Beth H Burr says
I make this all the time without the sugar or vanilla and sub it for cool whip. Most of the recipes I use it in have plenty of sugar in them. I call it “real whipped cream.”
Karen says
Just a tip…powdered sugar works even better than regular sugar in homemade whipped cream – it acts as a bit of a stabilizer to keep it a thicker consistency a little longer. I use 1/3 cup powdered sugar to 1 cup of heavy whipping cream.

Can this be made with almond milk? It’s not as thick as heavy whipping cream so I’m not sure how it would work.
Laurie says
Hi there Melanie! Sadly almond milk probably couldn’t be substituted in this recipe, but you may be able to find some good recipes on Google for almond milk whipped cream ~ hope that helps! 🙂

While you cannot use almond milk or other milks. You could use coconut cream in the can. Just chill it first like you would the cream. It works beautifully for a dairy free alternative.
Enjoy! Julie
