Tired of not having taco seasoning on hand when you need it? You more than likely have everything in your spice cabinet to make this homemade taco seasoning right now!
Homemade Taco Seasoning
Do you get halfway through cooking your taco meat for dinner and realize you used up your last pack of taco seasoning?  No worries! As long as you have some basic spices in your pantry you can make your own taco seasoning anytime!  I personally like to quadruple this recipe and have a bulk container of taco seasoning on hand. I used to buy the Old El Paso container but I like this one even more!
This also allows you to control the sodium, make it keto-friendly (did you know a normal packet has 18 CARBS in it?? It's the corn starch!) and avoid any save money!
Ingredients
- 2 tsps chili powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp cumin
- ¼ tsp pepper
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- 1 ½ tsp paprika
- 1 tsp onion powder
- pinch red pepper flakes
Directions
Mix all ingredients to equal one package taco seasoning mix. Use 1-2 tablespoons seasoning per pound of meat.
If you prefer to make a bigger batch, quadruple or even the recipe and store in an airtight container. The 4 oz mason jars with lids or the 8 oz mason jars with lids work perfectly for this recipe. The homemade taco seasoning can be stored in your pantry or even in the freezer.
Here's the measurements to multiply this recipe by four so you'll be ready for a few taco nights – but you can even multiply by 8 to have a lot on hand!
- 8 tsp chili powder
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp pepper
- 2 tsp oregano
- 6 tsp paprika
- 4 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp pinch red pepper flakes
Remember 1-2 tbsp per pound of meat – depending on how much flavor/spice your family likes.
Easy peasy and you'll be ready for Taco Tuesday every week! 🙂
If you like to keep bulk spices on hand – here are some nice deals we spotted over on Amazon today – you could have enough taco seasoning for five years of Taco Tuesdays!

Perfect combination! We make tacos/nachos on a regular basis and I really appreciate having a seasoning mixture that I can make myself and, control ingredients and exclude preservatives and other additives that I just don’t want or need.

your taco seasoning recipe is missing the quantity of garlic powder to use
Laurie says
Thanks so much for the heads up Diane ~ just updated the post! It’s supposed to be 1/2 tsp 🙂

Do you need to add water like store bought seasoning?
Laurie says
Hi Barbara! This recipe is a substitute for just the dry mix part of the packet, and most packets have you add 3/4 cups of water per lb of meat ~ but you can try it without the water as well if you like! 🙂 Hope that helps!

Love this idea!!
Is this considered medium hot? I can only handle mild, lol. Any suggestions to make it Mild?
Thank you, Merry Christmas
Laurie says
I would say medium – hope that helps!

If you cut out the red pepper flakes, the chili powder would be the only source of heat in this recipe making it more mild in flavor. Hope that helps!
