Ingredients needed
- Chocolate chips
- Water
- Egg yolks
- Vanilla
- Heavy whipping cream
- Sugar
How to Make Chocolate Mousse
Start by melting the chocolate chips and water in a small saucepan on the stove. Once smooth, stir a small amount of chocolate into the egg yolks to begin the cooking process.
Sit the yolk & chocolate mixture back into the remaining melted chocolate in your pan. Return to heat and stir constantly on medium-low for about two minutes or until slightly thickened.
Remove from heat and stir in the three teaspoons of vanilla. Transfer out of the saucepan to stop any heat and stir until cooled completely.
In a separate bowl, use your hand mixer to beat 1 1/2 cups whipping cream until it starts to thicken. Add three tablespoons of sugar and continue beating until peaks form.
(“Until peaks form” means that your mixture will literally start to resemble mountains – high mountain peaks will start to appear as you beat. If you're not seeing this, it's probably not done yet!)
Fold the whipped cream mixture into the chocolate. Cover, and refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours.
Now we'll make the homemade whipped cream topping! If you don't have time for this, you can use store bought whipped cream.
Place your mixing bowl and hand mixer whisk attachment directly into the freezer for 20 minutes prior. This helps the whipped cream to stay stiff and not start to melt.
Pour 1 cup whipping cream, two tablespoons sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla into the chilled mixing bowl. Whip on high speed until stiff peaks form, about 1 minute.
Top each serving of mousse with whipped cream and enjoy!
