Our Dawn Powerwash Spray Review
WARNING: While this worked for Jamie's car – I DO NOT WANT ANYONE TO RUIN THEIR UPHOLSTERY so please know this is not a recommended use of Dawn Powerwash by the manufacturer!
Many people have sworn by Dawn Powerwash spray for cleaning much more than dishes – using it on baseball pants with stains, upholstery, carpet and grimy kids' car seats. Inspired by other reader reviews, PPP Team Member Jamie recently used Dawn Powerwash as a last ditch effort to save her Jeep upholstery. She had this to say:
Jamie here! My son works at a tire store throwing tires, changing tires, rotating tires, etc… all day. When he comes home he looks like a chimney sweep! No surprise – the Jeep he drives to work was starting look about the same….
BEFORE:
The seat upholstery was stained BLACK from the residue left on his pants and hands.
And the car door panel was even a little sticky with a tarry black residue that wasn't coming off easily. (This is where he rests his arm on the way home – whew!)
I sprayed a light coating of Dawn Powerwash on the worst parts of the seat and door panel – and using a stiff scrub brush and water began to scrub in circular motions. I wasn't sure what would happen – but after reading that others had used it to clean badly stained car seats I thought it was worth a shot.
 AFTER:
The black grime came off easily – I was shocked! I probably could've scrubbed better in some areas – but I'm not looking for perfection here. 🙂

The door panel also got beautiful again! (Although I scrubbed a little TOO hard and I think I might've taken off a little bit of the surface paint….)
BUT THERE WERE ALSO PROBLEMS:
After I could see that the seat was clean – I ran into a little trouble because the Dawn Powerwash is SO GOOD AT SUDSING that I was having trouble getting all the suds out.
If you have a carpet or upholstery cleaner (or even a powerful shopvac) – you can wet it with cold water after scrubbing and suck the soapy water out of the seat. A few times of soaking and sucking should do the trick. In my case – I did the best I could with clean water and and scrub brush and called it “good enough” last night.
When the kids got home from school today I ran my hands over the seat and it felt totally normal (soft and clean – not soapy or “crunchy” at all) – so I'm happy with that!
WARNING: This is our “old beater” car so I was willing to take a bit of a gamble with Dawn Power Wash – but DO NOT USE UNTIL TESTING ON A SMALL AREA FIRST! It's obviously a powerful formula and I'd hate any of you to ruin your nice carpet or upholstery 🙂
