How to make a bunless burger:

Start by dividing your ground check into six evenly-sized burger patties. You want to roll the beef into a ball and flatten out a bit, making sure the patty is not too thick and not too thin. Season each patty with salt and pepper.

Next, preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Grill burgers for 4-5 minutes per side (until no longer pink), adding a slice of cheese to each patty for the last minute of cooking – the cheese gets so perfectly melted!

While burgers are cooking, prepare your bacon and slice tomatoes. Grab the butter lettuce leaves and separate. This particular kind of lettuce is great for a bun substitute because the leaves are typically large and the texture is softer and less leafy.

Top six lettuce leaves with cooked burger patties. Then, add two slices of bacon and one slice of tomato to each. I like to add a little sprinkle of coarse sea salt to the tomato but that’s optional! Finally, place another lettuce leaf on top as your “top bun”.

Serve warm and enjoy!

How to store:

Store cheeseburgers separate from toppings in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.

P.S. You can form these burger patties and season ahead of time to store in the freezer. Store raw patties in a freezer zip-top bag laid flat in your freezer. When ready to cook, thaw overnight in the fridge and make the rest of the recipe as shown.

Do you need to have a burger press to make this burger recipe?

Shh…don’t tell professional burger chefs – but I’ve never used a burger press! I think you can get by just fine with homemade burgers without using a press or any special utensils.
