Buddy the Elf Cupcakes

It’s Christmastime again which calls for my family’s annual watch (and re-watch) party of Elf! This is one of our favorite Christmas movies (we even named our dog after Buddy!) so I wanted to make this year’s movie night extra special. Enter these adorable Buddy the Elf cupcakes!

You know the scene where Buddy is with his new family and makes “breakfast” for everyone? But breakfast is spaghetti with candy and Pop Tarts? Well, I think that mixture is much better suited for a sweet treat than an actual breakfast, don’t you?

So, we’re recreating Buddy’s famous breakfast spaghetti in cupcake form! These cupcakes are actually so easy to make and really don’t require any more effort than making them the normal (boring?) way.

Here’s how to make these fun Buddy the Elf cupcakes

Ingredients and Supplies

  • Cupcake mix (I used Christmas Funfetti – I love the red & green sprinkles!)
  • Buttercream frosting (Grab the whipped if you can so it spreads a bit easier)
  • Your favorite candies – Buddy uses mini marshmallows, M&Ms, maple syrup, chocolate syrup, and Pop Tarts (you could cut the Pop Tarts into small squares to stick in!)
  • An icing piping bag with a small tip – the skinny tip for icing lets you make your frosting look like spaghetti

How to make Buddy the Elf Cupcakes

Start by baking your cupcakes according to package directions and letting them cool completely. For this design, you want a flat-ish cupcake top versus domed. To achieve this, you can reduce your baking temperature by 15-20° and increasing your baking time 5-10 minutes and being careful not to overfill your liners with batter.

I always pop my cupcakes or cakes into the freezer before decorating to avoid getting crumbly.

Next, fill your piping bag with the buttercream frosting. Now you’ll add the spaghetti. You can kind of randomly swoop the frosting all over the top of the cupcake in circles and loops to make it look like a pile of spaghetti. This does not have to be perfect since a bowl of spaghetti would not be uniform!

Finally, add your toppings and you are all set!

How fun are these?? My kids were absolutely delighted when I showed them and it’s such a fun memory I know they’ll be thinking about for years.
