In the world of household cleaners, solvents, and liquids there is one product that we think stands out among the rest. We're talking the unsung hero of household uses – white vinegar!
There are so many uses for vinegar in and around your home. From cleaning to sanitizing, laundry to get-that-random-sticky-thing-off, vinegar is the most versatile product you can have. Plus, it's budget-friendly and easy to stock up on.
The Passionate Penny Pincher team brainstormed all of our favorite uses for vinegar and compiled a solid list – and you may be surprised at some of the tricks our ladies have up their sleeves!
Here are our top 15 uses for vinegar to clean around the house:
Tip: Grab a spray bottle or two to have on hand for spraying vinegar with a lot of these uses. We like this plastic bottle or glass with a rubber bumper on the bottom.
- Homemade Floor Cleaner – this works GREAT for hardwood floors. And so much cheaper than expensive floor cleaners!
- DIY Glass Cleaner – only 3 ingredients (one of them is cornstarch – but just trust us on that one!)
- Refrigerator Water Dispenser – Mix with water and soak the tray of your refrigerator water dispenser to get rid of hard water stains.
- Homemade Soap Scum Remover – Keep this one under your bathroom sink for a quick spray and clean!
- DIY Carpet Spot Cleaner – this one uses hydrogen peroxide, another household hero.
- Clean your window tracks – sprinkle baking soda in those hard-to-clean tracks and pour vinegar over. Once it stops bubbling, just wipe with a cloth! Pro tip from PPP team member, Phoebe – take a Q-tip to get into the crevices.
- Clean & Disinfect Your Dishwasher – yes even IT needs to be cleaned regularly!

- Clean your essential oil diffuser – PPP team member, Lilly, says to just add a little vinegar instead of oils and let it run. “It doesn't smell like you might think!”
- Clear out bathroom drains – Team member, Staci, loves this trick. Pour 1/2 cup baking soda down the shower or bathroom sink drain. Add one cup vinegar and then cover with a plate or heavy rag. Let sit for 30 minutes and then rinse with one cup of boiling water.
- Get rid of mildew smells from fabrics – so helpful for those stinky bath towels!
- Remove kids' slime from your carpet – seriously, who invented slime?! I'd like a word. 😉
- Clean your coffee maker – one of PPP team member Laura's favorite uses for vinegar! Combine equal parts vinegar and water to make a full pot and run it through a brew cycle. Afterwards, run one or two cycles of just water to rinse (until it no longer smells of vinegar).

- Clean Your Microwave (use with this handy gadget!)
- Fabric Softener Boost – Add to your laundry in place of fabric softener and for an extra cleaning boost! PPP team member, Lauren, says “The vinegar whitens and brightens, gets rid of odor, and softens, too!”
