This week, I decided to do my main trip at Walgreens rather than CVS. Their ad is rockin’ and I thought “I can do this – goodness I teach it, right?!”. It took me over 45 minutes to check out. Y’all, I just do not have that kind of time. I have to say the manager and cashier was AMAZING! But it is still really frustrating because of all the “rules” Walgreens has.

So here is what I would advise anyone who is debating to start couponing at Walgreens:

#1. Pick a coupon friendly store. Walgreens to me is not coupon friendly. Although the cashiers I had were awesome! They cannot make the coupons work for some reason, even if they are legit. I felt just as bad for them as I did for me….

#2. Start small. If I would’ve just stopped after transaction #1 or #2 then I would’ve been happy, but adding transaction #3 just broke the bank.

#3. Get items you need or can donate. This is HUGE – what called me years ago to even work for Laurie was wanting to help other people donate to their local community.

#4. KNOW YOUR BUDGET. I totally went way over my budget seeing if these deals worked. I did save a ton, but it was not worth it to me since we will just donate everything (except the paper products).

#5. Scan the item on your Walgreens app and see if coupons pop up to match the sale item.

#6. Sometimes store pick up actually is better. I was talking to another couponer and she said she does online store pick up at Walgreens. She said its sooo much easier than buying the items in the store.

#7. Do not be ashamed to tell the cashier “I do not want that”.

#8. You will need filler items if you have more coupons than items. Do a quick count before heading to the register!

Transaction #1

Bought 2 Colgate Toothpaste – $2.99
Bought 3 Crest Prohealth Toothpaste – $3
Bought 2 Dove Body Wash – $7

Transaction #2

Bought 2 Irish Spring Body Wash – $3.99
Bought 1 Kraft Macaroni & Cheese – $.99

Transaction #3

Bought 1 Gillette Labs Exfoliating Razor Kit – $24.99, Get $5 CR

  • Use $10/1 app coupon
  • Submit for $5/1 Ibotta rebate limit 1
  • Used $13 RR from transaction #1 and #2
  • Paid $4.24 out of pocket, Got $5 CR (This didn’t activate so the manager had to add them) and $5 in rebate

So I paid a whopping $15.55 out of pocket and got $5 CR and $5.35 in rebates.  I lost $5 CR since I started with $10 and ended with $5 CR.

And again, I was there for 45 minutes checking out because of coupons not working and prices being wrong. I can type it out and it doesn’t look too bad, but when considering my time I spent, it was just not worth it.

I always do my Walgreens shopping online and curbside pickup. The app is easy to use and it’s easy to see the coupons.

That’s a great idea! It’s nice to have it all laid out in front of you where you can see it all.

Walgreens isn’t the kind of retail store made for this type of shopping. It is VERY annoying going in for a “fast” shop and get stuck behind someone trying to be a “coupon Queen”. PLEASE stick with big box retail/grocery store for this shopping and not a “convenience “ pharmacy.

Our Walgreens never has enough stock to accommodate these kind of purchases. There used to be a program called savings Angel which would publish deals like this and if you didn’t get to Walgreens Monday morning you were just out of luck because people would go in and buy out the stock and whatever they could get for free or super cheap. Is really annoying especially when these shoppers would then have garage sales to sell all their stockpiled items at a profit.

No CVS in my state so Walgreens is what I shop. I do online ordering and it saves me time and patience. Some stores are stocked and some are not. So instead of driving store to store I can just change stores online.
