How to Cook a Spiral Sliced Ham in the Crock Pot

Yup, you’ve got this.  If you’re thinking about cooking a ham for dinner but want to keep your oven space free, give this a try in the crockpot!

This is a SUPER easy recipe to make and most items (other than the Ham), you’ll likely already have on hand.

(It’s also gluten free . . . I’ve been making it at our house at Easter for years and am so excited to have that part of the meal already planned!)

How do you cook a spiral ham in the crock pot?

There’s not much to making a slow cooker ham in the crock pot – because it’s really already cooked.  What you’re doing is applying a glaze and taking a long cooking time so it won’t dry out!

To create a delicious ham in the slow cooker, place the pre-cooked Spiral cut Ham into the crockpot cut side down.

All you need to do after that is add your other ingredients for flavor (Brown sugar forms into a syrup and pineapple juice provides the sweetness for the magic ingredients in this recipe!).  It creates a delicious brown sugar glaze that’s perfect for any holiday dinner 🙂

If your Ham is too big for your crockpot, place the lid, cover the slow cooker and secure with aluminum foil, and as the ham cooks down through the day, you’ll eventually be able to latch the lid with no difficulties.

How do you make a slow cooker ham without drying it out?

Spiral Hams are already pre-cooked, so the goal of a making a spiral ham in a crockpot is to impart flavors without drying it out.

Making ham in crockpot is one of the best ways to give LOTS of flavor and moisture to your ham. You can set it with your favorite flavors and let them meld together all day long.

Your home will smell wonderful, your oven will be free to stay open for all of your other side dishes, and you’ll have a delicious meal ready to eat after just a few hours.

Slow Cooker Ham Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Unsweetened Pineapple Juice
  • 2 Cups Brown Sugar Divided
  • 1 7-9 pound Spiral Cut Ham

Instructions

  • Pour pineapple juice in the bottom of the crockpot (I just used the juices from a can of chopped pineapple)
  • Add 1 1/2 cups brown sugar on top of the pineapple.
  • Rub remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar over the ham.
  • Place ham in flat side down.Cover and cook on low 8 hours. (You may baste it if you want to once during the day, but I left it alone.)
  • Slice and serve ~ done!

Notes

Note: if the ham is just a bit too big for your crockpot, you can put the lid on and secure with aluminum foil. The ham will cook down throughout the day, and should fit nicely by dinnertime!

Hi Kay! If you cook a smaller ham, it may not take as long, or you could probably cook it on high for all or part of the time to cut down on the cook time (you’ll just want to make sure the internal temperature of your ham reaches 140 degrees F for safety!). Hope that helps!

  1. Mary Barretta says

At the beginning it says place ham cut side down (meaning on it’s side where the spiral cuts are, and in the directions, it says place ham flat side down. So which is it?

  2. Sharon Pond says

Would I need to adjust anything (time, etc) if it is a spiral cut ham? Thanks. Cooking novice here…

  3. Jenn says

Think I might try this with orange juice since I always have it on hand (and already finished with my Easter dinner shopping). Thanks Laurie!

  4. Sherrie says

doesn’t the brown sugar and pineapple juice carmelize on the bottom of the slow cooker – or does the ham basically steam in that yumminess?

    • Laurie says

I think they will go up and down… but am betting the lowest prices will be at Easter. (It makes a TON of ham…. for $13 you’d have enough ham for for at least 3-4 meals!)

Thanks for the info! There are only three of us, so I could freeze some leftovers for a quick meal on a busy day. Definitely making this next week! (My meals are already planned this week)
