Hashbrown Casserole Recipe – The Perfect Dish!
Every year for Easter Sunday, I make this Hashbrown Casserole along with some other yummy dishes for our Easter Menu Plan. It's one of those dishes that you can really have all year long though whenever you want some comfort food.
This cheesy hashbrown dish is SO GOOD and the whole family loves it. The secret is in the topping – crushed Ritz crackers!
This hash brown casserole uses frozen hash browns so you don't have to worry about the potatoes browning. This is such a popular recipe and is an easy potato casserole to make up in advance. Everyone seems to love it!
🍴TIP: This delicious casserole is also included in our Celebration Menu Planning Made Easy Set!Â
This can be used as a side dish with a dinner or can easily be a casserole dish that you serve as a brunch. It is ready to bake in just a few minutes after you put all the ingredients together and then bakes uncovered for about 30 – 45 minutes in a preheated oven.
Ingredients needed:Â
- hashbrowns
- margarine or butter sticks
- cream of chicken soup (you can also make your own homemade cream soup too!)
- sour cream
- shredded cheddar cheese
- onion
- Ritz crackers (crushed – for the topping)
To make your hashbrown casserole, you'll want to mix together your ingredients in large bowl and transfer to 9 x 13 pan. Next, crush up your Ritz crackers and combine with melted butter to make your topping.
Bake for about 30 minutes to 45 minutes uncovered (it always seems to take mine 40 minutes – just check your center to make sure they are cooked through). Your cheesy potato dish will be ready to enjoyed by all in no time!

Kristin says
Can you make this in a crockpot? And if so what would the cook time be?
Brooke says
I have not made this in a crockpot before, but let us know how it turns out if you try!
Amy says
Can you make this as a freezer meal / side?
Kat says
Can you add some type of meat to this?
Laurie says
Hmm, you probably could Kat! Maybe some ground beef/turkey, ham cubes, or bacon? Would love to hear how it goes if you give it a try! 🙂
Monique says
This is a recipe that was handed down to us from my hubby’s grandma. It’s a family favorite!! We make this recipe every year for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and it’s always requested by folks for potlucks too. I have made this before with diced ham and it was delicious!! Crumble some bacon on top… YUM!!!
Jennifer Ventura says
Do they have to be frozen potatoes or can you use the shredded potatoes that are in the refrigerator section?
Laurie says
Hi Jennifer! I would think you could use refrigerated ~ I would just reduce the baking time a bit. Hope that helps!
Teri says
What sides do you fix with this?
Laurie says
Hi Teri! You could serve it alongside ham and a salad, or maybe bacon and fruit – whatever sounds good to you! 🙂
Gail says
Can this be made ahead or does it need to go n the oven immediately?
Laurie says
You can totally mix up to a day ahead Gail – hope that helps!
Tracy says
Do you thaw the hashbrowns before mixing?
Laurie says
Hi Tracy! No – I don’t thaw them out (hope that helps!)
Elisha says
Do you melt the stick of butter before you mix it in with everything?
Kristen ~ PPP Team says
Hi Elisha, for the actual casserole part you will just want your butter softened so that it mixes in well but for the topping it will need to be melted 🙂 Enjoy!!
Shannon says
It says margarine. Can you use butter?
Kelly Teeter says
The recipe says square hash browns but the picture shows shredded has browns . Does it matter what ones you use?
Laurie says
Kelly great question – that was a typo, shredded are perfect!
Kelly Teeter says
Thank you SO much! I am making these today……. Happy Easter
