Sidewalk Chalk Obstacle Course
Want to keep your kids busy this summer? Make your own sidewalk chalk obstacle course!
This is such a fun, screen-free activity that gets your kids moving! My kids worked together to come up with more challenges to make our sidewalk course more elaborate, and then when it was all ready to go, they had so much fun going through it!
This activity is perfect for planning a playdate, filling a summer afternoon, or just trying to burn off some energy before dinner. The best part is that this colorful outdoor activity delivers big fun with minimal effort. That's a mom win in my book!
What You’ll Need:
- Sidewalk chalk (the more colors, the better!)
- A flat stretch of sidewalk, driveway, or blacktop
- Optional: cones, hula hoops, or jump ropes to add extra challenge
How to make your own chalk obstacle course:
Use your chalk to draw a variety of challenges. Here are some that we used:
- Pop the bubbles
- Hopscotch squares
- Spin in a circle
- Jump like a frog
- Squish the Bugs
- Walk the zig-zag line
- Tap the stars
Get creative! You can tailor it to your kids’ favorite characters or add silly instructions like “Roar like a dinosaur!” or “Do a silly dance.”
Some other ideas could include:
- Bear crawl
- Slide on the snake
- Jump over the fire
- Hop like a bunny
- Long jump
- Clap your hands
- Jump on one foot
Some other tips:
- Draw arrows or dashed lines to guide kids through the course.
- Let your kids help color in stars, draw flowers along the path, or add encouraging messages like “You've got this!” and “Almost there!” A few bright drawings can turn a simple course into a magical adventure.
- Older kids might enjoy timing themselves or racing friends.
- Make puddles of water with the hose to add another level of difficulty to the game!
I love how this summer activity is low-prep and high-reward, it keeps kids active without feeling like exercise, and it sparks creativity. Plus, it’s a nostalgic nod to classic outdoor play (hello, 90s summer vibes!).
So grab your chalk, head outside, and get doodling! Sometimes the simplest activities often create the best memories. It definitely doesn't need to be perfect.
