How to Make Sidewalk Chalk Paint

Are you looking for something fun to do with your kiddos? Try out this homemade chalk paint!

Several years ago, (MANY years ago!), we made this DIY sidewalk chalk paint, and as I was looking some old pictures I noticed these.   I remember how much my kids loved it and it was so simple and definitely penny pinched so I wanted to share this easy DIY.  It’s a great idea to help beat boredom and gives the kids a great memory too – fun!

Ingredients for Homemade Chalk

Here’s how to make chalk paint with acrylic paint:

Gather up your ingredients.  You may already have all of this in your pantry.  If not, you can grab everything through an Amazon Prime order!

  • Plaster of Paris – 1 cup (you can get a big container of this for not very much!)
  • Water – 1 cup
  • Acrylic Paint (for color – you can find small bottles of paint at the Dollar Tree or Walmart too)
  • Mold for chalk (you could even use small paper cups or ice cube trays if you don’t have a mold)

Mix together your plaster of paris and water.
Then, separate in small containers or Ziploc bags and add a few drops of paint and mix until you have your desired colors.
(You can pour the plaster of paris mixture into muffin tins or your molds and then add your coloring to each space to easily change your color palette too!)

Note: This may leave white residue even after it’s washed away – test out in a small spot on your driveway to be on the safe side if you’re concerned about that prior to letting your kiddos have at it! 😉 It washed off for me without any issues, but someone let me know they’ve had that problem with it in the past.

That’s a great question! I have never tried it that way but I don’t know why it wouldn’t work. If you try this, please let us know how it turns out. We would love to hear! 🙂

This works sooooo well. I thought it would not work because of the separation issues but with a paint brush always dipping in it keeps it mixed and any colour works great because the white cornstarch makes a great bright base… My girls loved it and so did my daycare kids. Thank you so much!!!
