THE BEST Bread Machine Dough Recipe

This is the best bread recipe you will ever try. And it’s SO easy.  The bread comes out a little bit sweet, a little crusty, and softy and yummy on the inside…. just perfect.

You’re welcome. 😉

Here’s how to make the BEST Homemade Bread:

Gather up your ingredients above and heat a cup of water to 110 degrees.  If you don’t have a thermometer, just use warm tap water. (Confession – I have NEVER used a thermometer and my bread has always turned out just fine!). One of the reasons I love this recipe is that it is SO forgiving!

Adding items to bread machine to make bread

Place all ingredients into the bread machine mixing bowl in this order; warm water , milk, oil, honey, brown sugar, salt, all purpose flour, then yeast. You do NOT need to worry about stirring!

Set your bread machine to the bread dough setting and then let the machine do all the work.  This generally takes several hours depending on the machine that you use.

bread dough in pan

Once the dough is finished, remove and place into a greased loaf pan. You’ll then want to let your bread rest until it doubles in size – this rise time will generally take between 30 minutes to an hour.

Near the end of that time, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

cooked homemade bread

Once your bread has doubled in size, place it in the oven for a bake time of about 30 minutes until golden brown.  Place your loaf of bread on a cooling rack for a bit, and then enjoy! (We love this Copycat Texas Roadhouse Cinnamon Butter with our bread for a treat).

Bread Machine Dough Recipe

Ingredients

Bread Machine Bread Dough Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Water Warmed (110 - 115 degrees)
  • 1 Tbsp Milk
  • 2 Tbsp Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Honey If you don't have any, you can skip this, and it will still turn out fine!
  • 2 Tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 3 Cups All Purpose Flour You can also substitute with half whole wheat flour
  • 2 tsp Instant Active Dry Yeast

Instructions

How to Make Homemade Bread in a Bread Machine

  • Heat 1 cup of water to 110 degrees.  (If you don't have a thermometer, just use slightly hot tap water and it will be just fine. (really!) I never use a thermometer and never have any problems with my bread machine dough rising.)
  • Put all ingredients in the order above into bread machine (you don’t need to stir it , just dump it in!)  Water, milk, oil, honey, brown sugar, salt, flour, then finally - yeast.
  • Set bread machine on dough setting, and let it make the dough for you over the next couple hours.
  • Once dough is made (it takes my machine about 1 1/2 hours to make just the dough), remove dough and place in loaf pan.
  • Let bread machine dough rise for about 30 minutes to an hour, until it's around double the size.   When I don't have time to let it rise, I just go ahead and bake it a little sooner and it works out fine. This recipe is extremely forgiving!  Towards the end of this time, preheat oven to 350.
  • Bake bread dough in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, and enjoy!

machine to bake sandwiches

Note – if you’re away from home during the day you can let the bread machine do all the work for you, I just don’t like the weird shape that my bread comes out in when I use the machine so choose to make it on the dough setting and then bake it in a loaf pan.)

Now serve it up with homemade Texas Roadhouse Cinnamon Butter, and ENJOY!

If you don’t have a bread machine . . .

First, say a prayer that you’ll find one at a yard sale (I really do love mine ~ here’s a reasonably priced one at Walmart that gets good reviews!). You’ll also want a good bread loaf pan.

While I prefer using this Bread Machine Dough Recipe, there are others out there that you can use to bake bread without the machine.  This has just become our go to recipe and it’s so good!

Why Easy Homemade Bread Is WORTH MAKING

You may wonder, why do I take the time to make homemade bread when I can easily grab a loaf at the bakery….

Honestly? I’ve made this recipe for years now about once a month, and every time I pull down my bread machine out of the pantry my family gets a wee bit excited.

homemade bread sliced with butter

In fact, many years ago as I was driving my then 15 year old home from band practice we had this conversation ….

“Guess what I made?”

“Chicken and dumplings?”

Nope.

“Italian Beef?”

No.

“Some chocolate chip cookies?”

Seriously kid? Nope – not that either. Homemade bread! I really am the best mom, right? 😉

“Mmmmm . . . yup, you really are the best mom.” 😉

sliced homemade bread

Folks, this kid was a sophomore at the time so I knew I only had a few more years to convince him my cooking is worth coming home once he scooted off to college.

If chocolate chip cookies, homemade bread and chicken and dumplings do it, you can bet we’ll be eating those for years to come  . . .

buttering homemade bread

And besides the fact that it is delicious – it’s truly easy to make.  It has a few steps, granted, but they’re not hard steps!

I can’t make it more often than once a month because I have very little self control when it comes to a loaf of warm homemade bread in the kitchen, but when I do it’s just a happy treat for the whole family.

It’s so simple to make and takes about 5 minutes of effort ~ so worth it if your family loves homemade bread too!  Give this Bread Machine Dough Recipe a try and let us know how you like it 🙂

We make this recipe every single week! I actually make two loaves—one plain and one topped with Everything Bagel seasoning—and both turn out amazing every time. My kids absolutely LOVE it and so do I! It’s become a true staple in our house. Thank you for such a simple, foolproof, delicious recipe!

    • Alice -PPP Team says

I love this! Thank you so much for sharing that with us. My kids love it too! I’m going to have to try it with the Everything Bagel seasoning. I bet that is delicious! 🙂

As a newlywed, I was set on learning basic recipes like this. My husband LOVED it. …and now 8 years later, I can say this is still my go to for us and our 3 kids! They get excited whenever they realize I’m making bread! I’ve been asked to bring it to get togethers often. We eat with honey and butter, homemade jam, or as rolls with roast beef. So versatile and you can’t go wrong! I’ve shared it with several friends!

    • Bethany - PPP Team says

Aww, that makes us SO happy to hear, Logan! So glad recipes like this one have become tradition in your house, thank you for sharing that with the PPP Team. 🙂

    • Bethany - PPP Team says

You definitely can Nicole! Mix the ingredients by hand and let them rise in a bowl on the counter until doubled for the first rise (rather than in the bread machine). Then place in a loaf pan and follow the rest of the recipe as written in step 5 and 6. I hope that helps!

      • Tammy Caruthers says

In steps 3 & 4 if using a bread maker it appears to take one and a half to two hours for the first rise. If not using a bread maker, and simply setting it on the counter, will it take about the same one and a half to two hours for the first rise?

This recipe is the best! I’ve made this recipe several times now and it is the easiest, most forgiving bread recipe I’ve ever made. It comes out delicious every time. I have made it with oat milk and soy milk both were perfect. Today I don’t have time for the second rise so I put it in the fridge and several hours later put it in the bread pan and put it in a warm spot for about 2 hours then baked it and it still came out so yummy! You literally can’t mess this up

I make this all the time. Sometimes I use all purpose flour, other times bread flour. Today I used all purpose flour BUT this time I added an egg before adding the flour and yeast. This took the bread to a whole new level!!! It rose better, baked better, and tastes better. It’s more light and fluffy!

  5. Beth says

Its in the breadmaker right now, Im super excited to try this bread! Just wanted to comment and say I love y’all’s planner, its my 3rd year using one and with a small business and 2 toddlers it help to keep me on track!

    • Carolyn says

Personally I make the dough in my bread machine then do second rise and bake in a loaf pan/oven because if my machine baked it, I would have a vertical loaf. I prefer the traditional loaf shape.

Since I couldn’t find where to write a comment I’m piggybacking in this one….
I make a lot of breads in my ABM and this dough is very very sticky / I had to added a good 1/2 to Cup of flour and kneaded it in – hope it will bake up right since I hate to throw things out.

I had the same problem! I had to add about a half cup of flour to get the dough to come together. You didn’t say how yours turned out. I’m keeping my fingers crossed I’ll end up with something edible.

          • April says

Update: Bread came out great! Don’t sift or loosen flour before measuring it out. Thank you for the recipe!

          • Dorothy G. says

Hello, I weigh my AP flour making 120g = 1 cup. Even adding an additional 15g made the dough too loose, so I eyeballed adding another 1/2 cup flour until it looked right. Boom. Problem solved!

  7. Ariel says

I want to say a heartfelt thank you for posting this recipe. I scoured google for years for a bread machine recipe. They never worked (too dry, flat, too tough) I gave up for a couple years and decided to try again. This is the most perfect recipe. You are so good at explaining things. My 12 year old son and I just tried this today and it was DELICIOUS!!! I don’t think I can make this too often. My husband ate more than half and the rest we devoured within hours. This recipe is going on our family recipe book. Thanks ever so much for sharing.

  8. Rachel says

Hello! I’m wondering if I can double this recipe? If I add double the ingredients to the bread machine then split it between 2 loaf pans? (This question has probably already been asked but there are so many comments to scroll through! Ha!) thanks in advance:)

    • Madison ~ PPP Team says

Hey Rachel ~ I think you could definitely double this recipe. Let us know if you have any more questions!

    • Kim says

Just made this tonight in my bread machine that’s been sitting in the cupboard for many years. The bread turned out amazing and was so easy to make. I had no issues and didn’t need extra flour, etc. One thing I did modify was to brush it with melted butter before putting in thr oven. I am now wondering though about trying it with whole wheat flour. Would that work?

I have been looking for a perfect bread machine recipe. Some don’t rise or too dry or just wouldn’t come out. I found this recipe today and figured what the heck and OMG this is thr best bread ever!!!! My bread machine baked it and it was just perfect. The settings I had on it was basic white and 2lb loaf. Thank about do much for the recipe!! Family LOVES it!!

It’s so good!! I didn’t have regular milk or enough honey, so I used almond milk and maple syrup. It’s crusty and soft. It also rose so much! I will definitely make this again.

I never comment on recipes, but I just HAD to with this one. It is perfect! I substituted SF Maple Syrup for the honey and it gave it just a subtle sweetness. Absolutely delicious! You will not be disappointed.

New to bread making and have been trying different recipes to find “the one”. This Is It. Easy, tasty and quick. Made this four times now and it has been more delicious each time. I had bread flour at home instead of all purpose and it worked very well with that. Even the edges are all soft and delicate. You can start this in the evening when you get home and it will be ready to bake right before bedtime, then you have fresh bread in the morning. Give it a try you won’t be disappointed. Thanks so much!!

  13. Lisa Marie Hatfield says

    Oh my!!…..I just made this!!

    It is ~wonderful~

I only had bread machine yeast so I found somewhere on line that you reduce the amount by 25% as a substitute for the Instant Active Dry Yeast.

Also, my bread machine dough setting does the rising as part of the cycle so it was super easy to make.

    This recipe is a keeper!

      • Ashley says

You definitely can! If you’re away from home during the day you can let the bread machine do all the work for you, I just don’t like the weird shape that my bread comes out in when I use the machine so choose to make it on the dough setting and then bake it in a loaf pan.).

This dough makes the tastiest loaf. The consistency of the bread is perfect; not too soft but not too coarse. I use half white flour and half whole wheat flour for a healthier loaf. I make a loaf every second day!!

  15. Michelle says

My family loved your recipe before I needed to go gluten free for celiac disease. Could you tell me how I could make this gluten free?I’ve been trying but it hasn’t turned out right. Are there any modifications that need to be made other than switching the flour? Also, if going to bake it all in a non-gluten bread machine what cycle would I need to bake it on? Thank you so much!

    • Laurie says

Hmm, not sure the best way to make this gluten free Michelle ~ you might be able to find a great tried-and-true gluten free bread machine recipe on Google though! 🙂 Wishing you the best in your search, and happy baking!

I was teasing with my teen son that the internet says this is the best bread recipe so it must be true. I made it by the book and just had my machine finish it. I took him a piece and didn’t say anything. He came into the kitchen a few minutes later smiling and said, “it is the best”! The whole family agrees. Thanks!

Help me. I don’t know what I did wrong. The first time I made the bread dough I used my bread machine the loaf was beautiful. I gave it to my son and my husband was upset he wanted it. Since then I’ve made two loaves I’ve had to throw away they didn’t rise enough or rise when I baked. Tonight I tried using my stand mixer dough hook for 5 minutes rise 1 hour in bowl then 30 minutes into loaf pan. I had to bake it for 40 minutes so it didn’t look partially uncooked when I sliced into it. I have used all the same ingredients I did the first time. What could it be?

    • Laurie says

Hmm, I wonder if somehow your yeast is no longer good Laura? Or maybe your milk wasn’t quite warm enough? (Perhaps try with some newer yeast to see if that helps!). So sorry your last few didn’t turn out right, but hoping your next attempt will be great! 🙂

    • Lauren says

I noticed you posted in January-I have had issues with other bread not rising before during the winter months, I think my house is too cold and dry. My oven has a proof setting that I have to use then!

        • Chris says

The lowest setting on your oven (175-200) should work to proof bread dough. Alternatively, find where your oven vents (mine is across the back above the burners) and proof your bread while you’re baking something else (dessert, dinner, cookies)

    Hey Laurie!
I live at a high altitude. I’m wondering if where you live is over or under a 3,000 feet elevation?
This will help me determine the yeast, sugar, and liquid adjustments for my altitude.

Thanks so much! I look forward to making your recipe!

    • Laurie says

Hmm, if you have an extra large machine it’s possible that may work Stacy, but if you have a regular machine, it might overflow ~ if you give it a try, we’d love to hear how it goes! 🙂

    • Laurie says

Hmm, I think you probably could Jane ~ the texture might be a little different though! Would love to hear how it turns out if you give it a try! 🙂

  21. Em says

I’m looking at buying a bread machine because I want to make this recipe! Do you recommend a size? Would a 1.5 lb be ok or should I get a 2 lb machine?
Thank you & love your site! 🙂

    • Kristen ~ PPP Team says

I think a 1.5lb would be great! That’s the kind I have and it works great for my family! I know you will love it!!

  22. Barbara says

I have made this bread several times and it comes out great! I especially like your idea of using the dough cycle then removing and baking in a loaf pan. Now I’m thinking of using your recipe to make bread bowls. I think it would make 4-6 bowls. Do you think it will work?

    • Laurie says

So glad the recipe has worked well for you Barbara! I think it should work just fine as bread bowls ~ great idea! 🙂

  23. Gail says

This is my favourite bread recipe! I have been making it twice a week for more than a year so thank you very much!! I was wondering… Is there anyway I can add fresh chopped herbs or chopped garlic to the recipe in the bread machine and still maintain the same results?

    • Laurie says

So glad to hear you like it Christian! Hmm, I would think you should be able to add herbs and/or garlic to the recipe and it still maintain the same results ~ would love to hear how it goes if you decide to give it a try! 🙂

  25. Christian McCulloch says

How many pounds is this loaf? i just bought a 3 pound breadmaker and i wonder if i could double the recipe and make 2 loaves.

  26. Katherine says

Can you substitute bread flour for all purpose flour? Recently bought a bag of bread flour and did not realize I had a package in the freezer. Can’t wait to use my bread machine again. It’s probably been 10 years since I used it. Thank you.

  27. Chris says

Hi, I have tried your recipe for “The Best Bread Machine Dough” three times and have had the same problem each time. The dough rises well over the top of the loaf pan, but when baking, it falls flat and spills over the sides of the pan. It is done baking in about 25 min with s very dark crust. Can you help?

    • Laurie says

Hi Chris! Hmm, are you baking it in your bread machine, or in the oven? Maybe try baking it in the oven if you usually bake it in the bread machine (or vice versa!). Hope that helps! 🙂

    • Jeannie says

Hi, I’d say it’s over risen, if you don’t let it rise so much I think that would eliminate the problem, because it’s going to rise a little more when you pop it in the oven. If it rises too much it will collapse. Good luck!

  28. Aundria says

I don’t have a bread machine. I wonder how long I need to let it make dough and rise in a bowl and a kitchen aid mixer

  29. Laura says

So I tried the recipe in my oster bread machine, and after the hour and a half I took it out and it wasn’t completely mixed, I mixed it in a bowl and put it in the loaf pan so we shall see

I’ve made this a few times and it came out great! One suggestion, you might want to mention that it’s best to grease the loaf pan before baking the bread in the oven. A friend of mine who is not a real seasoned baker didn’t know to do that and her bread stuck to the pan. I actually just sprayed non-stick spray on the pan before baking and it came out easily. Thanks for the recipe!

      • Laurie says

You should be able to mix up the dough in a stand mixer with a dough hook (or by hand) and bake in the oven Barbara ~ it may just take a little longer to make the dough! 🙂 Hope that helps!

    • Larry says

I totally agree, Laura. I am a retired man who knows nothing about cooking or baking. I pulled out my bread machine and tried to make dough for the first time ever using this recipe! Everything was AWESOME until I tried to get the loaf out of the glass loaf dish (or is it still a pan?). Anyhow, the whole ‘muffin top’ of the loaf tore off and everything else was stuck. Yes, I cut around the edges as best I could with a knife first. No dice. Definitely going to spray the glass next time and I added that to my recipe. Needs to be added to the online version here too!!! It’s not a pretty loaf but it still tastes AMAZING!!!!

  31. Karen says

Could I roll in balls and then place in fridge overnight before rising and bake in the morning? Thanks

  32. Cherylyn says

Can’t find the recipe to use if you don’t have a bread machine. Hoping to try making this bread. Can you help?

    • Laurie says

Hi Cherylyn! Hmm, you might be able to make this using the dough hook on your stand mixer, but you can also find some non-bread-machine recipes on Google! 🙂 Hope that helps!

  33. Elaine says

I’ve tried a few recipes for bread in my machine over the years, but this one *has been* fail proof so far! Thank you! I use all whole wheat flour and skip the sugar, using 2 tbsp maple syrup instead of honey (we are out) perfect rise and texture, great slice-ability.

I realize this is an old post, however just wanted you to know that I made your Best Bread recipe yesterday and it will be replacing my previous favorite bread machine recipe. Great rise, easy to slice, and most of all- tastes delicious. I made it exactly following the recipe using the honey and let it rise for almost an hour. Thanks!

  35. Andrea says

I made your recipe but substituted my KitchenAid mixer for the bread machine. I threw everything in the bowl, mixed it on speed 2 for two minutes, let it rise once (90 min) in a buttered bowl, then patted it out into a 8×12(ish) rectangle, folded it like a letter, put it in a buttered bread pan, let it rise another hour and then popped it in the oven. It looks perfect. (Tried to post a photo but it won’t let me). I can’t wait to taste it.

    • Laurie says

Hmm, I’m not sure if this recipe would turn out with those flours, but you might be able to find a low carb bread machine recipe on Google Shelly! 🙂 Hope that helps!

  36. Christian McCulloch says

I love your recipe thank you! Can i brush the tops with egg wash? and should i do this before the 30 minute rise or after?

    • Laurie says

So glad to hear that Christian! 🙂 I think you could totally use an egg wash if you like! (I think you could do it before or after the rise ~ if brushing after the rise, just be gentle so as not to deflate the loaf!). Hope that helps!

  37. Mitch says

I always freeze my dough. I tried to bake with it right out of the freezer. It makes the bread a little tougher and harder for the ingredients to mix in. So either let it sit out or I put it in the microwave for about 6 minutes on 80%. That worked for me, my micro is 1100 watts.it doesn’t hurt the plastic it’s packed in either. So,room temp is best!!

  38. Lorraine Shackleford says

I just made another loaf of your amazing bread recipe. I use Bread Flour. I spray a glass pan with cooking spray, put the dough in and cover with wax paper to rise. Then bake according to your instructions. I’ve had my Oster Bread Machine since 2002 when I began making everything from scratch for my husband who had liver cancer. I can say that this is the Best Recipe I have ever used!! I make it all the time for myself. I just cannot eat store bought bread anymore. It just isn’t the same. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful recipe.

  40. Lindsey says

If I just make the dough in the bread machine, how long and at what temp do I cook it in the oven?

  41. Priscilla says

Hi! I just wanted to say I love this bread recipe! I’ve made this a lot for my family & they love it over any store bought bread. It’s such a simple recipe and make our home smell like heaven! Thank you for sharing this!

    Hi! Laurie,
My girl friend sent me this recipe for best bread machine dough,
I just bought a new bread making machine,
in the booklet it says avoid perishable food such as milk, egg and cheese,
I really want to try your recipe, can I make the bread in the machine without
transferring the dough to a pan, or is it best o bake in the oven,
this is my firs experience. Thank you so much, Ellen
P.S. the recipe is from passionatepennypincher.com

    • Laurie says

You definitely can Ellen! The only reason I move it to a loaf pan to bake in is because I have a VERY old bread machine and the loaves turn out like an ugly square when I make them, and I like a pretty loaf. Hope that helps ~ and ENJOY!

  43. Torri says

Hey Laurie, clearly I’m late in the train here but I’m wondering what is the best way to transfer from bread machine to loaf pan. Got a little smushed when I tried to transfer and a little stuck from the bread machine. You don’t grease both pans do you? Third question, have you ever tried to score the top or is this not the type of bread to do that with? Thank you! I didn’t have time to let mine rise but it was still good!

    • Laurie says

Hi Torri! Okay – let me see if I can help 🙂 –

      – I just used my hands and pull it out of the bread machine, then plop it into a well greased loaf pan. I didn’t grease the bread machine pan though (but have never had issues with it sticking?)

      – I don’t score the top but you totally could!

Hope that helps- it really is my favorite (you just inspired me to make this one tomorrow … I can’t wait!) 🙂

  44. Susan Gros says

I just made this exactly as written. It came out fantastic. I just used the machine for the dough itself, baked it in a loaf pan. Just added some melted butter on top before and after baking. Great recipe. Will try the cinnamon bread next.

  45. Jennifer says

I just found this recipe and am anxious to try it based on all the positive reviews. I’m wondering if there is a modification for a 2lb loaf? My machine is that size, and since I’m new at this, I unsure if it will work. I am worried it will burn, or not turn out right. Any suggestions for modifications? Thanks!

  46. Erica Smith says

O.M.G I am so glad I stumbled on this recipe today!!!!!! I had to use Almond milk to make is safe for my dairy allergic son but that didn’t seem to make the bit of difference. We all LOVED this bread and I have a feeling it will be requested again soon, it was by far the best part of the meal 🙂

I’ve made this a few times now and it is by far my favorite recipe! I forgot the oil this time, but I had topped it with butter pieces before baking it and it still turned out amazing. Thank you for sharing.

  51. Lorraine Shackleford says

I just made this with my bread machine dough cycle and finished in loaf pan in the oven. It’s delicious and will be my go to recipe from now on. Thank you for sharing. I’m going to make the cinnamon bread recipe in a couple of days.

  52. Loretta says

Thank you for the recipe. I bake mine in the machine. For this type of bread I like the squate slices for my sandwiches. It’s so easy…got one baking now

  53. Luz says

OMG tried this recipe and like it very much. The first time turn out a little dry so after talking with my daughter she suggested to add another tbsp of liquid and to use lard instead of oil and that really mage a huge difference. Turn out to be moist. Next I am planning to let rough rise 3 times for a thinner crust. This, was my first time making bread at home and got hooked cause is,way more affordable and fresh all the time.

Will you please recommend a yeast? This will be the first time I have made bread with yeast. Also, how do you check the temperature of the water? Thank you for all you do with PPP! I look forward to your videos and emails.
    Thanks!

  55. Bebe says

I have made bread for many years and so far this is the best recipe of all the many breads I have made. It was quite a hit with the family. Thank you– BeBe

  56. Peggy says

Thank you for this recipe!!! I had stopped making bread and was ready to take my bread machine off the counter and put it away. I decided to give it one more go and found your recipe online. My previous attempts at bread making produced flavorless bread that was dry and crumbly a day later. But this recipe is flavorful and still moist on day three when I made toast from the last slice. I like simple ingredients and knowing what is in my food. This will be my family’s bread from now on.

  57. Cheryl says

This is amazing! On my 4th batch! I love it so much i a man making for my neighbors. Will continue making it. Thanks!!

    • Jeanette says

So far this is the only way I’ve made this recipe. It turned out great! I baked the rolls for 7-10 minutes at 350 or until they’re golden brown.

  58. Jodif says

I’m eating my first slice….It is seriously AMAZING!!!! Thank you so much….it’s perfect and so easy.

  59. Sabrina says

Just tried this recipe and it turned out amazing! It was perfect! The texture was perfect, it was moist and delicious. Even my mom-in-law who loves to bake her own bread thought mine was great. Thank you so much!

  60. Hope says

I used this recipe today & the bread came out great. My only issue was that my bread machine didn’t mix it completely so I ended up kneading it by hand. To get around this, can I use this recipe in a kitchenaid mixer using the hook?

  61. AY says

This was my first go at making homemade bread and let me tell you, I’m hooked! This recipe was so easy and it turned out amazing! My family loved it. My husband loves bread but he is very picky. We only buy uncut bread from a certain local bakery, like I said, VERY picky. He LOVED this bread. In fact he said it was the best he had ever had and would be happy if I would make this instead of buying again. I have made this a few times now and it never disappoints. So thank you for an amazing recipe that will be used over and over again by our family. 🙂

  62. Hillary says

Oh my, this is the best recipe ever! My family absolutely loves it. I’ve tried lots of other bread recipes and by far this is the best. I’ve quit buying store bread and make this instead. I think I am going to try out the cinnamon one this weekend.

  63. Amber says

I followed Otto a T and it was delicious. Well, the part I managed to scrape out of the pan. I know better but I didn’t grease the pan and paid the price. What a lovely bread though. So tasty.

  64. Jess Byam | Jest Kept Secret says

This bread is amazing! I have made it twice now, and I really love it. It has a great texture and taste, it’s super simple, and it has turned out perfectly both times. I really wanted to start making all of my bread instead of buying it, and I’m super grateful for a recipe that will make that goal happen! Thank you!

Hi Lois! I was unable to get the print button to work as well, so I copied and pasted to a blank word document and printed it from there. Hope this helps! 🙂

  65. Denise says

Can you freeze the dough to use at a later date? If so, do you rise it at room temperature first? I’d also like to let you know, this is the BEST dough I’ve made so far. Thank you for sharing the recipe!

    • Laurie says

Hmmm Denise – I’ve never tried that but would think that would be okay? Would be worth trying once to see how it goes! So glad you liked the recipe – thanks so much for letting me know!

    • Jeannie says

      5 stars
Aaahh-mazing!!! This is a great recipe, takes such little time to throw that list of ingredients into the bread machine and make the dough then just flop it into the greased loaf pan let it rise up again, only took 30 minutes for me, and boom you’ve got fresh hot bread that taste better than anything you’ll ever find at the store! I used 2 1/2 cups of unbleached organic white and a half a cup of whole wheat, and I only use the honey as my sweetener, no brown sugar, just thought it might be too sweet, anyway thank you for such a great recipe! It looks like I slaved in the kitchen and I really didn’t ha ha

  66. Shanda says

So the flavor of this is awesome, but my bread (I baked in my machine) collapsed in the center 🙁 what could have gone wrong??

    • Laurie says

I have no idea Shanda – I’ve never heard of that! You did use slightly warm water as well as yeast? That’s so strange (I’m so sorry!)

    • Kirby says

I bet you had it set to 2lb loaf…. I’m making now and I thinking mine isn’t going to rise and going to be way over cooked… we shall see

    • Sharon says

The same thing has happened to me two times. Followed the recipe correctly. Don’t know what the problem could be?? Resetting my settings again. Baked a King Arthur recipe with regular flour and it words. Perplexed.

  67. Shon says

I halved the recipe as my bread maker is 1lb, but it still made a very small loaf, so next time I’ll just stick with the original. It turned out great though, it tastes wonderful and was super easy to make! Definitely worth a try!

  68. Angie says

Prayer Answered;) found my beautiful bread machine for $3 at an Amish yard sale!!
Ready to make your bread this morning.

    • Laurie says

Hi Lara! You can, but I have a very old model bread machine, and it makes it in a square kind of lump which I just don’t like, so I swap it over and bake in the oven. Yours may do better than mine though!

  69. Aline says

Hi! It is my first time here and I already loved this site! Just want to ask if this “1 tablespoon milk” is powder or liquid milk. Thank you! xo

  70. Carol says

Can’t wait to try this! I tried to pull up the link for the cinnamon bread machine recipe and I think the link is broken. Can you please send a good link? Thank you!

  71. Cheryl says

I made this the other day with 2 cups whole wheat flour and 1 cup white flour and it was delicious!! Will definitely make this again!!

  72. Cheryl says

Ty for your reply, Laurie! I think I have the ingredients and may give it a try with wheat flour tomorrow. I will let you know if I do!

    • Laurie says

Yes Cheryl! I just updated the recipe – I’ve made it before with half whole wheat flour and half wheat flour and it’s been great. I’m not sure if I’d completely use whole wheat flour but it wouldn’t hurt to try? In fact, I may try 2/3 whole wheat and 1/3 white flour next time just to try a little more wheat flour each time. (If you use whole wheat I would definitely be sure to include the honey in the recipe to sweeten things a bit.) I have whole wheat flour in my pantry right now so I may have to try and see how it goes!

  73. Laurie says

Hi Jaime! I do spray the loaf pan with cooking spray before baking ~ I’ll go update the recipe! Thanks for pointing that out Jaime (and hope you all enjoy it!)

  74. Jaime says

Sounds so good as we head into cooler weather! Do you spray or flour the loaf pan before putting the dough in? Thanks– my family has enjoyed many of your recipes!

  1. […] This bread recipe was the winner in the test kitchen this week.  It was extremely easy to make, and tasted declicious. Miss Bean and I made it together on our first day of school. She loved peeking in the window of the bread machine while it worked, and it made the house smell wonderful! Even the teenager and husband approved, and asked me to make more! I definitely see this becoming a regular addition to our menu.  I might even surprise them with this cinnamon version. Funny, how a simple thing like freshly baked bread can make so many people happy! […]
