Spirit Airlines Shutdown

Spirit Airlines, a pioneer in low-cost airline travel, has shut down all operations globally as of 3am EST on May 2.  All flights have been cancelled and their website instructs customers not to come to airports.  Refunds are available for cancelled flights via Spirit’s guest portal.

Impact on Travelers:

Thousands of travelers were upset to find themselves stranded as they arrived at the Spirit terminals and were met by cardboard “Out of Business” signs.   Even customer service has been halted, and those with canccelled flights have been instructed to book with other airlines.  With customers scrambling to book alternate flights, there is some good news:

Other airlines are offering capped “rescue fares” – often around $200 – for affected flight routes:

  • JetBlue is offering $99 one-way fares for travelers who can prove they have a canceled Spirit ticket through May 10
  • Frontier Airlines is offering “rescue rates” of up to 50% OFF with code SAVENOW through May 10th.
  • Delta Airlines are offering reduced, non-refundable “rescue fares” in affected markets over the next 5 days.
  • American Airlines is offering reduced rate to canceled flight ticketholders
  • Southwest is capping ticket prices to $200 – $400 for Spirit flights who are rebooking through May 6 (You’ll need your flight confirmation number and proof of payment)
  • United Airlines is capping ticket prices $199 – $299 for Spirit canceled flight ticketholders through May 16
  • Allegiant is freezing prices on routes that overlap with Spirit

Impact on Employees

Around 17,000 employees found out Friday that they’ve lost their jobs – some with over 25 years with the company.  The Department of Transportation announced they will be putting into place relief measures for employees.

Not a Complete Surprise

This shutdown doesn’t come as a complete surprise, considering Spirit filed two bankruptcy claims in the last couple years.  And more recently they’d begun to cut costs by cutting routes and pursuing a government bailout.

The Spirit website currently reads:

It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately. To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 33 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.
