Homemade Lemon Shake Up
Have you ever had a Lemon Shake Up at your county fair or a fast food restaurant? They are SO delicious and absolutely hit the spot on a hot summer's day. But, if you're not at the fair or you don't want to drop $5 on one (albeit delicious) beverage, we've got a recipe for a Homemade Lemon Shake Up that is amazing!
This is similar to making homemade lemonade but kicks it up a notch. Plus, using fresh lemons really makes all the difference – you'll never want to make powdered lemonade again.
Here's how to make it!
P.S. Don't you just love my lemon bowl?! Would you believe it's a planter?! That's right – get the details on it here!
Lemon Shake Up Recipe
You may have all the ingredients for this sweet treat on hand already. You'll need:
- 1 lemon
- 1 cup crushed ice
- 1 cup water
- 3 tablespoons sugar
How To Make a Lemon Shake Up
Start by washing your lemon well (you'll be using the peel). Next, put your crushed ice in a large cup (I used a 16 oz. cup – make sure you have another one the same size for your shaking!). If your fridge or freezer doesn't make crushed ice, you can place some ice cubes in a Ziploc baggie and crush them with a meat mallet.
Funny note: My freezer has just a large ice bin and doesn't make crushed ice. I tried to crush it in my Ninja blender – it was immediately pulverized! But, I discovered that you could easily make this a Lemon Shake Up Slushie by doing this!
Cut your lemon in half and squeeze all the juice into a small bowl, discard the seeds. Pour the lemon juice and pulp (strain out the pulp if you're not a pulp fan!) into the ice.
Add cold water, sugar, and what's left of your lemon. Top with the other cup and SHAKE! Make sure your top cup has a tight fit otherwise this will get messy. Stir with a spoon if needed.
Add any additional sugar to taste. Pour into a pretty glass and serve. I love to garnish with a lemon slice!
Can you add different flavors to a Lemon Shake Up?
Yes, you can!
You can easily mix and add flavors to your heart's content. If you've had flavored lemonade, you know that there are so many fruity flavors that pair perfectly with lemon.
Strawberry Lemon Shake Up – Add a few pumps of Strawberry syrup to your mixture (start with just 1 or 2 and work up so you don't overdo it!)
Cherry Lime Lemon Shake Up – Grab this yummy Cherry Lime syrup to add to your mixture. Top with some maraschino cherries for extra fun!
For fruity fun all summer (especially if you're hosting a gathering and want to make a large batch of Lemon Shake Ups), you can grab this fun Variety Pack of Sugar-Free syrups featuring Strawberry, Peach, and Raspberry.
Can you make a Lemon Shake Up sugar free?
You sure can! For a sugar-free option, there are a ton of great substitutes without sacrificing flavor.
Sugar-free sweeteners for your Lemon Shake Up:
- Monk Fruit (this pack is a great option made by Splenda)
