You know what's the best? Pizza. Pizza is the best! You can take pretty much any holiday and add pizza to make it instantly better. That's why homemade heart shaped pizza and Valentine's Day are the perfect pair.
You can make your own lovey-dovey pizza at home for a cozy Valentine's night in, or make these for your kids leading up to Valentine's Day.
(P.S. We've got some other ideas and recipes for making a frugal Valentine's Day dinner at home!)
Ingredients for this Homemade Heart Shaped Pizza Recipe:Â
You can buy premade crust like this and cut it into the shape of a heart, but for this one I made a homemade pizza dough. I'm using my favorite pizza dough recipe – it is so yummy every single time! Here's what you need:
For the dough:
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/2 tsp brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 3 1/3 cups flour
For the pizza:
- Pizza sauce (I used store brand premade sauce)
- Pizza cheese (I used good old fashioned mozzarella)
- Your toppings of choice!
How to make Heart Shaped Pizza:Â
You'll want to start by preparing your dough according to the recipe.
Note: make sure to give yourself extra time for the homemade dough as it requires one hour of rising time.Â
Once your dough has risen and has been kneaded, place it in a ball on your surface. I would recommend using parchment paper to roll out and shape the dough for easy transfer to your pizza stone or pan.
Tip: Start the heart shape while your dough is still in a ball and then roll out. If you roll the dough flat and into a circle, it will shrink back to it's original shape when you try to make the heart.Â
Like you would if you were playing with play dough, shape your dough ball into a heart. Roll out carefully, re-shaping as needed and using your fingers to spread, until your dough reaches almost the edge of your pan and maintains your preferred thickness (some like thin crust and some don't) throughout the pie.
Finally, add your toppings! I love to start with a drizzle of olive oil. Then sauce, cheese, and any other toppings you like. I used a tiny heart cookie cutter to make heart-shaped pepperonis.
Bake at 425 degrees F for 15-20 minutes. (As you can see, mine got a little overcooked so make sure to watch!)
Mini Heart Shaped Pizza Recipe
Since I had the pizza dough already, I decided to make mini heart shaped pizzas for my kids.
Before I rolled out my large pizza, I reserved some of the dough (not a ton) and rolled it out flat. I used a large heart shaped cookie cutter (like the ones they have right now in the Target Dollar Spot) to cut out mini pizzas. I topped as normal and baked for about 10 minutes. They were a cute, small size for kids!
Where can I buy a heart shaped pizza?
Don't have the time or energy to make your own pizza? Last year we saw a TON of restaurants offer a heart shaped pizza for Valentine's Day. Most of these stores offer these from year to year, so we expect they'll offer the same for 2024!
