I think the secret to making a giftcard gift seem a little more personal is to try and create an “experience” for the person. So instead of a movie gift card, tell them you want them to have a fun evening with their spouse (or a friend) by doing a restaurant gift card AND a movie gift card.
Or go the extra mile and offer to babysit so your friends can really have a Date Night!  Going to their house to babysit and putting the kids to bed before they get home is even better 🙂
