Egg prices have skyrocketed in the last 2 years – here's what's going on currently …
Find the Cheapest Eggs
With the egg prices breaking records the last couple years, we've started to wonder if they'll EVER go down. Well, according to the U.S. Dept of Agriculture's report, egg prices are down $1.20 per dozen this week, marking a 15% drop from data taken Feb. 28th. Forbes, too, is reporting a drop from $8/Dozen at the beginning of March to $5.51 as of March 11th.
After polling our team, we're not all seeing this drop, but we're curious if you are!  Fingers crossed we'll see lower prices before Easter 🙂 For those with super-high egg prices, check out our post of the best Egg Substitutes for Baking.
Wondering where to buy the cheapest eggs? If you've been to the store lately to grab a carton of eggs, you've probably gotten sticker shock… The price of eggs has skyrocketed in the last couple years to prices never seen before.
Why Are Eggs SO Expensive Right Now?
Starting in November 2022, the cost of eggs rose by 49% according to CNN. And now we've watched them creep up to $6- $8 a dozen as of March 2025! To put it into perspective even more, in 2018 a carton of eggs at my Aldi was 55¢ and as of yesterday it was $4.99. That's crazy!
Buy why? The rapidly rising cost of eggs is due mainly to Avian flu outbreak, which began back in February of 2022 and has affected the prices steadily for the last few years. Millions of poultry have died from the disease. Other factors like higher feed and energy costs for farmers and producers has also had an impact as inflation has affected things across the board.
PPP Team Member Shannon spoke with the manager at her local Sprouts grocery who predicted that while the cost of meat may drop some this year – the cost of eggs will stay this price for some time. YIKES!
So, with eggs being so expensive and not likely to change for a awhile – we set out to find out where to buy the cheapest eggs.
NOTE: This information is from 2023,
Where to Buy the Cheapest Eggs
Looking around the Alabama area when this all started back in 2023 – these were the cheapest egg prices. We know these prices will vary by state but it's a good indicator of which stores to go to for the best deals overall. Keep in mind that sales and the passing of time have changed the prices below.
#1 – Sam's Club Egg Prices WIN!
2 Dozen Cage Free Large Eggs – $5.38 *JUST $2.69 each!
Not a huge surprise because Sam's Club has always been a place to buy cheap eggs but $2.99 is HOT compared to some of these other crazy prices!
18ct Pasture Raised Large Eggs – $6.22
#2 – Costco Egg Prices:
If you like to buy your eggs in bulk – Costco seems to be the go-to destination for lots of folks looking to score a deal.

#8 – Publix Egg Prices:
1 Dozen Large Eggs Cage Free – $3.99
No big surprise here as Publix is normally pricier than other groceries (Unless it's a BOGO item)
Head over to see what are the BEST Egg Substitutes
I shop weekly at Kroger and eggs are currently $4.99 a dozen. I compare prices at Kroger, Walmart, Target and Meijer. I believe your egg prices listed are not current .. possibly an older article that needs editing?
Thanks for letting us know, Donna! This post is an updated post. Unfortunately, not everyone is seeing the same prices everywhere. Some of our team members were seeing lower prices than others.
Idk when those above prices are from – but those are not the prices in Florida as of March 2025.. 60 ct is $28.69 .. 1 dozen is $5.97
Unfortunately, not everyone is seeing a decrease in prices yet. We are hoping by Easter they will start dropping for everyone. Thanks for letting us know! 🙂
I paid $8.12 yesterday for eggs at Walmart I live in California
Thanks for letting us know! 🙂
Ruler’s Foods, a Kroger discount store, has eggs for $2.99-$3.99 per dozen. Recently it was $1.99 (limit 5 dozen). However, Ruler’s has limited locations in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky and Missouri.
On 1/2/23 ShopRite in Toms River, NJ
30 for $13.99 and 60 for $26.99
Thanks for letting us know!
Aldi in Virginia 3.99 today
Thank you for all that the PPP team does! Your hard work is very much appreciated. Someone from California said they were paying $12 per 18 eggs. That’s!
I buy from my local neighbors that raise chickens. Only $2.00 for a dozen if fresh brown eggs. If they are small I always an given at least 6 for free. Helping my community and saving money.
5 dozen eggs were $24.98 at our local Walmart in Nampa, Idaho. I was so shocked I took a picture.
Straight from the farm delivered to me $3.00 a dozen.
The price increase is because of the new regulations the CDC started enforcing in November on chicken farms. The price of feed hasn’t increased any significant amount and the birds that died from the avian flu outbreaks from this spring have already been replaced. (Chickens have a short life cycle. New chicks will usually be reliable egg layers at 6 months old.) The price increases started when the farmers had to comply with the new regulations in November. You might be able to find cheaper eggs from a local small farmer. They don’t have the same set of regulations that is increasing the costs.
Thank you for explaining this to me because I knew something else had to be going on besides the Avian flu.
Never thought I’d need a HELOC to buy a dozen of eggs! Yikes!!
I have seen eggs and DOG FOOD jump dramatically here in Georgia! Do you think you can find us the best Dog Food prices? I went from paying 18.96 for a 46lb bag to 27.96 in a matter of 3 months! That’s almost a 50% increase in 3 months! Struggling is not the word!
Guess I’ll need to take advantage of our city’s 3-chicken limit and raise my own eggs. Good for the environment and composting … About the time they start laying, egg prices may start coming down…
Last Friday, 6 January, I refused to buy eggs. I have a lot of store options in my part of SW Michigan, but I only regularly shop 3 or 4. I never go to Walmart because the 2 in my area are disgusting w/ very rude employees. Eggs at Aldi were almost $5.50/dozen. Eggs at Meijer were about the same w/ their Penny Smart line being just under $5/dozen. There were no eggs at Sam’s Club.
I never though I would see the day when a dozen eggs cost more than a gallon of gas.
I found eggs at $6 for 2 dozen at Costco.
Wow! That’s a great deal. We’ll have to look there. Thanks for the tip!
Walmart large eggs $5.28
Smith’s large eggs $5.19 today in Utah
Thanks for letting us know!
I’ve exclusively shifted to going to my local farmer for eggs. $5.50 a dozen (up from $5). That’s pretty much the same as the organic eggs in my local store, so it’s much nicer to support the local farmer & get some really fresh (packed same day or day before) eggs.
For folks who have a Lidl in your area, they have 18 count for $5.34 right now. Lidl is a discount German grocery store much like Aldi. They started opening stores in the Atlanta area a couple of years ago, but I don’t know how common they are in other areas.
Thanks for letting us know!
The 18 pack @Lidl in Maryland is $6.73
Wow – I live in central Illinois and our eggs are at $4.05 at Walmart, $4.39 at Aldi, $4.59 at County Market but only $1.89 at Ruler Foods (owned by Kroger). Not sure what I would do without our Ruler Foods store.
Wow! Wish we had a Ruler Foods store nearby!
I’m getting farm fresh eggs 18 for $5. I have to wash the chicken butt nuggets but right now it’s worth it.
That’s a great price!
Thank you so much for the time invested in rearching and sharing this. I feel like I have ‘inside info’ lol. all of you at PPP really are The Best!
You are so welcome! This is just the sweetest! Thank YOU!
Yes Michele, you have all that right!
They are a great team! Thank you PPP for all you do!
On 1/10/23 I spent $5.99 on one dozen eggs at Kroger in AZ! Also I’ve seen items jump by anywhere from $1-3 each lately!! It’s SO maddening!!
Grocery prices are crazy right now. I hope we can help you find ways to save, especially on eggs!
fantastic work and information you guys!
We appreciate your kind words, Lisa! Glad it was helpful! 🙂
I paid $17 for 36 eggs here in Minnesota at Walmart. So expensive!
I found a dozen at dollar general for 3.95
Wow – good to know, Donielle! Thanks!
I would have never thought to check at Dollar General for eggs, good to know.
They have decent priced fresh produce as well.
So glad to hear!
Thanks for the article. I got a 40 cent coupon from Kroger’s the other day so I used it. Besides that, I have been making flax eggs and using egg replacer for baking. There are just some meals that require real eggs.
Always happy to help! I hope we can help you find some more ways to save on eggs. Times are tough right now!
In Colorado, our egg prices are even higher, and scarcer as the state is mandating all chickens to be cage free and better fed. As the move is made amidst, the recent bird culling supply is thin. Costco is always the best price, but they have no eggs to sell. It’s the toilet paper rush all over again.
Oh no, Brandy! That really is a bummer. I hope we can help you find ways to save on eggs, especially since they’re so in demand and high-priced right now!
Yes! We live in Colorado too and it’s a miracle if we find ANY eggs. Natural Grocers seems to be the best bet we’ve found here. $3.99/dozen seems to be the cheapest we can get. Ji
So sorry to hear you’re having a hard time find eggs!
That is interesting. As I was reading this I was thinking that the pasture fed eggs would not go up as much because they don’t have to worry about the expensive feed only the shipping prices.
As of this afternoon, Aldi eggs in KY are only $3.99 which is $1 cheaper than listed above.
Thanks for letting us know, Whitney!
Same in NC.
In my part of Florida, Winn Dixie consistently costs more than Publix. Yikes!
Bummer, Mel ~ Thanks for letting us know!
Here in Melbourne, Fl I also find that to be true Mel.
Great article! Just discussing this at my house.
So happy you enjoyed it, Lori!
Sam’s club eggs could be free if you have reward money!! Sam’s doesn’t wait till end of year to use your rewards.
Oh wow, Judy ~ Thank you so much for letting us know!
