These easy DIY watercolor Valentine cards are fun for kids AND adults – and they're so simple to make. Find out how!
DIY Watercolor Valentine Cards
Laura, here!
I love creating gift baskets, dropping off homemade treats to friends, and surprising people I love with goodies, especially for Valentine's Day. The perfect addition to a homemade gift is a homemade card! These DIY watercolor Valentine cards are so fun and incredibly easy to make. I think watercolors are the best paints for beginners because they are forgiving and fun to work with.
These cards require very little supplies, and there are tons of ideas online for designs to give you some inspiration. Here's how to make them:
Supplies needed for DIY Watercolor Cards:
You only need two pieces of supplies to make these cards – watercolor paints and watercolor paper. I found this great set at Target that has a variety of colors AND came with a pad of paper for an awesome price. (Here's another option for paint on Amazon with quick shipping). You can also find pre-folded watercolor paper cards with envelopes on Amazon to make sending even easier.
Some optional supplies you can use with your cards: markers or pens to write on the front, scissors if you want to cut down to smaller cards, washi or painters tape to create shapes to paint within, or stencils to trace.
How do you paint cards in watercolor?
I started this DIY the same way I start a lot of projects – by scrolling Pinterest for inspiration! I love seeing the cards other people have created (although you can tell most of them are artists, so mine are simpler designs).
For this card, you want to create hearts in the center in various styles and colors. I tried to do a variety of skinny and fat hearts. Then, you can write a word or phrase underneath that applies to you. I chose the word “always” because this card will be for my husband! But, “Happy Valentine's Day” is a great, safe option.
Here's another fun watercolor option:
You can see the pencil that I erased when I was done. I went with one simple heart but you can go wild!
Easy Watercolor Valentine Cards for Kids to Make
If your kids want to get in on the fun, stencils or items to trace are a great options. For this card, I used a heart-shaped cookie cutter (kind of like the set available that you can typically find in the Target Dollar Spot) and traced it with pencil.
This gives kids some boundaries to work within. Have them fill in the heart with whatever colors they like, and then add their name or a cute saying once it's dry!
Another great option for kids and adults is to use washi tape to make stripes on the card. Apply strips of tape starting in the middle and working out, and paint within the lines of the tape. Then, remove the tape to reveal the clean paper. Add words and boom – done!
