Using an old sweater to make a valentine's pillow

Valentine’s Day Decorative Pillow DIY

Laura, here! If you love adding some lovey dovey decor around Valentine’s Day, I have such a fun DIY for you!

I love a good accent pillow but sometimes have a hard time finding cute ones I like. So, I decided to make my own! However, I only pretend to know how to sew, so any pillow DIY that requires a needle and thread is just not my jam.

That’s where a thrift store sweater comes in… (Just hear me out!)

How to make a DIY pillow using an old sweater

My two goals for this DIY were 1) low cost and 2) easy to create. I’m happy to report this was a major WIN and I know you can make one, too!

I was inspired by this adorable Valentine’s Day sweater and felt like I could recreate this look semi-easily on a pillow.

I used this plain, black throw pillow from Walmart. It’s a soft material and the best part is the price – it’s a great base!

Head to your local thrift store and scout out a sweater. Depending on the size of your pillow, I would grab an adult size to make sure you have enough material. A chunkier-knit sweater is best for this DIY. I loved this white cable-knit sweater but ended up with a cute polka dot style that was half price for orange tag day.

The last item you’ll need is fabric glue. If you are a sewer, you can absolutely use needle and thread to make this pillow. But, if you’re like me, grab a heavy duty fabric glue like this one.

Start by cutting your sweater up until you have just one piece of material big enough to cover as much of your pillow as you like.

Then, just like you’re making a little paper valentine, fold your fabric in half and cut out the shape of a heart. You can trace this on a piece of paper ahead of time, but I decided to just wing it.

You can trim and adjust as needed after your heart is cut out. Note: just don’t trim too much. It’s kind of like waxing your eyebrows – you can’t put it back on once it’s off.

Next, apply a generous amount of fabric glue to the back of your heart. Carefully transfer to your pillow and press down gently to adhere.

THAT’S IT! An adorable, homemade pillow to celebrate your love day in style.

Total project cost is about $12 – a total win in my book!
