Costco Membership Card Scanners
Have you been to Costco lately?? Not only are the membership prices going up in September (we have a deal!), but Costco members will soon have to scan membership cards upon entering the warehouse.
According to Costco’s website, membership scanning devices will be added at the entrance door of ALL Costco stores over the coming months. Before entering, members will be required to scan their physical or digital membership card by holding the barcode or QR code up to the scanner.
PPP Team Member Laura visited her store today in Colorado and found the scanners at the front of the store, followed by a long line of shoppers who were unfamiliar with this new change.
If your membership is inactive or expired, an attendant will ask you to go to the membership counter before entering the store to shop. Costco also encourages all members to also have a photo taken to have on their membership card. If your card does not have a photo, customers will be asked to also show a valid photo ID.
If your store does not have a scanner yet, it will soon! Costco did not give an exact date for these changes, but said the membership scanners will be rolling out within the next few months.
What do you think of this change??

I often wish there was a Costco closer to me. I have a Sam’s card and use it regularly. I love the scan as you go on the app so that I don’t have to wait for a check out line. I like that my app is the same as my card, my wallet is full enough. No one actually checks you in at my store, they do have the receipt checkers when you leave however.

I find Costco’s new policies very offensive and not at all customer friendly.

We appreciate you chiming in, Barb!

I agree 100% with Barb there’s no reason to have to scan or show your card when you go into the store you show it at check out and have people checking your receipts when you leave with is okay and should be enough instead of discouraging people you should be welcoming them they are paying to be members

I don’t know why they want everyone to have a photo for their Costco card because the photo on mine is thumbnail size so I don’t see that as being very useful…

If you ask me a total waste of money! What’s the point you need a card to purchase items, you can also buy a gift card and use it yourself at the store:) no need for all this! If you ask me, the one thing that they can get rid of, are these people that check the receipts on the way out absolutely useless!
Lila says
Amen! It’s a useless job
