How to Make Pie Cupcakes

If you are not a big fan of pies, but still want to join the fun for Pi Day or Thanksgiving, these pie lookalike cupcakes are the perfect solution.  They’re so cute they could absolutely be used year round for a fun celebration too!

They have all the charm of a classic lattice berry pie, just in cupcake form. They are simple to make and so fun to decorate. Once you add the M&M “berries” and the lattice frosting on top, they really do look like tiny pies.

These cupcakes are perfect for Pi Day, Thanksgiving, summer picnics, or classroom parties, and they always get people talking. They have the cutest little bakery-style vibe.

Ingredients and Materials:

  • 1 dozen cupcakes (any flavor; I used vanilla from a store-bought cake mix or make your own)
  • Tan-colored frosting to mimic pie crust
  • M&M’s (I used red and blue to resemble berry filling)
  • Piping bags
  • Piping tips for decorating (I used a star and a flat tip)
  • Foil cupcake liners (they look most like a pie pan!)

How to Make “Pie” Cupcakes:

Start by baking a dozen (or more) cupcakes using your favorite recipe or a boxed cake mix. I made vanilla, but any flavor will work. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before decorating.

Next, tint your frosting so it resembles the color of pie crust.

Note: You can use brown food coloring, but I mixed orange, black, and green food coloring to achieve a similar shade. You could also experiment with adding a small amount of cocoa powder to naturally deepen the color.

Pipe a small amount of frosting across the top of each cupcake where the “berry filling” will go. This helps hold the M&M’s in place.

adding M&Ms to top of cupcake

Place the M&M’s across the top of the cupcake in rows, lining them up close together so they cover the surface. I used about 20 M&M’s on each cupcake.

Using the tan frosting, pipe thin lines across the M&M’s in one direction and then pipe lines in the opposite direction to create the classic lattice pie pattern.

Frosting a "pie crust" on top of a cupcake using a piping bag

Finish the cupcake by piping the “pie crust” around the edge. Using a star piping tip, pipe along the outer edge with a gentle up-and-down wavy motion to mimic the look of a homemade pie crust.

And there you have it! You have the cutest mini berry “pie” cupcakes that look bakery-worthy but are easy enough for anyone to make. These are such a fun way to celebrate Pi Day, Thanksgiving, or any festive gathering.
