DIY Water Balloons
Mamas, these DIY water balloons are about to be your new best friend! If your kids are like mine, they love water balloon fights, but we don’t do them very often because they’re are kind of a hassle. They’re fun for the kids, but whew, the aftermath! The cleanup is the worst, and finding all the tiny pieces of plastic in your yard afterwards is kind of a buzzkill.
Water balloon fights are also over so fast. You spend 30 minutes filling balloons… and the fight lasts like, 4 minutes tops. Then comes the whine: “Can we do it again?”
Can you tell this emotion is fresh on my mind? 😂 So when I saw this alternative water idea, we HAD to do it!
Grab a couple things and come along with me to make these DIY water balloons!

Supplies for DIY water balloons:
- These sponges (buy a two pack if you want lots of sponge bombs!)
- Rubber bands
- Scissors
You’ll also need a big bowl or bucket of water for outdoor use.
How to make homemade water balloons
I love these sponges because they come flat so they’re easy to work with! Cut each sponge into thirds lengthwise.
Next, stack about 8 layers of the sponge and rubber band them together.
Then, fill a large bowl with water and toss in your sponge stacks. After the sponges soak and fill with water, twist the sponge pieces around the rubber band to get them into more of a ball shape.
That’s it! Add all your DIY water balloon sponges to a big bucket or bowl of water and let your kids have at it.
My favorite part about this summer DIY is that kids can keep re-soaking their little sponge bombs themselves so you don’t have to spend your day filling balloons! MOM WIN.
