If you’ve got a bin of broken crayons sitting around, this is hands-down one of the best ways to turn them into something new and ADORABLE!
Valentine Crayon Hearts
These valentine crayon hearts are sweet in the best way! They’re thoughtful, practical, and fun, and they make the perfect little Valentine for classmates, friends, and neighbors. And since there are so many sugary treats around this holiday, we LOVE how these are an alternative sugar-free gift option!
It’s also a great craft for kids to help with. They can unwrap the crayons, break them into pieces, and even sort colors to create their own custom hearts. If you’re staring at a pile of broken crayons right now, this is your sign: turn them into something cute! 😀
What You’ll Need
To make these heart-shaped crayons, gather:
- Crayons (broken ones work perfectly!)
- This heart-shaped silicone mold (the one I used makes 24 hearts)
- Glue dots
- Cardstock (to turn into Valentines)
I went with classic Valentine colors like red, pink, and purple, but you can absolutely mix it up. Rainbow hearts are super fun too!
How to Make Crayon Hearts
1. Unwrap the paper from the crayons and break them into small pieces to fit into the heart mold.
Bonus tip: If the paper is being stubborn, toss the crayons into a bowl of water and let them soak for a bit. It loosens the adhesive and makes peeling way easier.
2. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Fill your silicone mold with crayon pieces and bake for 5–10 minutes, just until fully melted. Keep an eye on them while they melt; each oven is different and it can melt quicker than you think!
3. Carefully remove the mold from the oven and let the crayons cool completely. The wax can spill easily, so move the mold gently and keep it level. Once cool, gently push from the bottom of the silicone mold to release your crayon hearts.
Turn Them Into Valentines
To make these gift-ready, I created a simple Valentine card in a Word document and printed it on cardstock. You could also design one in Canva, or grab a printable from Etsy.
A couple phrase ideas:
-
“Have a colorful Valentine’s Day!”
-
“You color my world, Valentine.”
Use glue dots to attach each heart-shaped crayon to the cardstock.
Optional but helpful: If these are heading to a classroom party, slip each one into a cellophane treat bag so the crayon heart doesn’t fall off or get lost in a backpack before the big day.
Whether you’re making these for a classroom party or just for fun at home, Valentine Crayon Hearts are a simple craft that feels extra special. Using leftover and broken crayons you already have makes this project incredibly budget-friendly, while still creating something colorful, practical, and fun. Your kids will love handing out something they helped make too!
