My husband I have been married for eighteen years this month. (Craziness!) When we first were married we had a very basic bedroom set that was just fine, but I dreamed (and dreamed, and dreamed) of having a prettier set. However, what we had really was okay, and new bedroom furniture was pretty low on the list of priorities when it came to major purchases. (Read more on how we started out HERE.)
So, I waited. And waited, and waited, and waited.Â
Finally, about five years ago (after exactly thirteen years of waiting), we bought bedroom furniture for our home. We ordered it from a place similar to Furnitureland South, which is a store that allows you to find furniture at your local furniture store, then call them to see if they can offer you a better price.
You typically pay a lot to have them ship the furniture to your home (it comes in a truck specifically delivered to you), but when purchasing higher end furniture (especially a lot of it), you can get some incredible savings. (Note – it's been five years since we've purchased from them and I'm not positive that the savings are what they were at that point, but it's worth making a phone call if you have a certain set of furniture you've been hoping for!)
It was hard waiting so long for something I wanted so badly, but looking back I'm so glad I waited. My style has changed (so much!) since we were first married ~ I was only 21 then and had no idea yet what I really loved! By waiting though I was able to get exactly what I wanted, and I'm pretty sure I'll love it forever. (Thankfully I like pretty traditional furniture, which makes the chanace of it becoming very dated hopefully a little less likely?)
Other than the furniture, the only items I've bought for the room are the bedding (TJMaxx of course) and picture frames. One of the lamps was a gift at our wedding that I re-painted from brass to silver using Rub ‘n Buff (I love that stuff!), and I found the other one at a yard sale. (Truth be told, I'd like a new set of lamps and am kicking myself for not looking for a set last weekend when we were at the Ballard Designs Outlet ~ they had some incredible prices on lamps that were just beautiful, so one of these days I'll need to go back!)
   Â
Here's our view from the bedroom in our new home – eventually I'm sure the farm behind us will have more homes on it, but at least for now we're loving the view each morning. (The blinds are just temporary shades that our blinds company gave us to use until we figure out what we really want ~ if you're looking for someone to do blinds in the Columbus area, let me know ~ I've been so pleased with this company!)
The moral of the story? It is hard to wait on something you want so much that you can almost taste the goodness of it. But, (I promise!) I'm so glad we had to wait a few years to get exactly what we wanted, because ~ at least for us ~ it's perfect.
This was the professional shot of our bedroom from our home sale a few months ago ~ the color in this picture is a little more blue than it really was, but you get the idea! Â The chair in the corner was a hand-me-down, and my friend Misty and I spent hours re-upholstering it. I gave it to my niece to use in her first apartment since we don't have room for it now ~ gotta love furniture that keeps on going!
And here's an updated picture of our bedroom now that we finally added mirrors and matching lamps.mirrors and matching lamps. I love this space!

Love the lamps. When we got married, 34 years ago , I used money I saved to buy a good Drexel bedroom set. Still love it after all these years but, just changed up the bedding, lamps, etc. a few years ago and I love my bedroom. It’s amaz how a redo makes you feel so good.

This post made me smile! I spent the first 16 years of my marriage cobbling together bedroom furniture (a hazard of military life) before we bought a set that is almost identical to what you have pictured here. Sadly, our bedroom set outlived the marriage, but (many years later) I wake up happy in my 4-poster!!

it’s funny that you talk about bedroom furniture, we have been married almost 30 years and I hope I am getting close to getting new custom built by my hubby bedroom furniture, we have 1 piece of our original cheap make do with gonna replace quickly bedroom furniture, we do not need anything but a headboard end table and dresser maybe a lingere chest, it will be well worth the wait.

We have been using craigslist furniture in our bedroom that was supposed to be temporary for six years now! I am now dying to hand it over to our son who is graduating from a toddler bed so I can get my own big girl furniture!
