How To Make Snow Cream At Home
If you're expecting snow soon, this DIY Snow Cream is such a tasty treat – using only 4 ingredients you likely already have at home! Our secret ingredient is a little bit of vanilla extract to make this treat taste almost identical to real ice cream.
Grab some fresh fallen snow and mix in a few additions and you've got homemade and extra fun snow ice cream to enjoy with your family on a cold winter day.
Snow Ice Cream Ingredients
- Fresh snow
- Milk (plain or chocolate)
- Sugar
- Vanilla
How to Make Snow Cream
Whisk together the milk, sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Combine with snow in a large bowl and mix. To get a nice, creamy texture you need to mix for a bit longer than you'd think, so feel free to have your kids take turns mixing!
If it isn't quite creamy enough, add a splash of milk and stir until it reaches the desired consistency.

Toppings and Mix-Ins
Since this recipe turns out almost exactly like traditional ice cream, you can add your favorite sundae toppings! We chose chocolate syrup and sprinkles, but this would be good with cut fruit, chocolate chips, nuts, and more!

Tips for Making Snow Ice Cream
Since the snow can get kind of yucky the longer it's on the ground, try to use fresh snow if you can! Depending on the temperature, you may need to put the snow in the freezer for a bit before adding the milk mixture so it doesn't melt.
Snow cream does melt a little faster than regular ice cream, so make sure to serve quickly or pop it back in the freezer until your family is ready to enjoy.

I make it like you do but I add a dash of salt, not to much to the milk. I have used orange drink powder (to taste (TANG) so good.
Alice -PPP Team says
That’s a great idea to add the drink powder! I’ll have to try this next time we get snow!

We have always made it like your recipe! I love snow cream! We don’t get to have it very often where we live in NC, but I always put my pans out when there is a chance of snow just in case! You can also put extras in the freezer. It thaws pretty quickly!

Love that Jioan ~ so fun! 🙂

I used evaporated milk, and have used half and half
Both give a richer flavor and texture.

Sounds yummy Arlene!

I hadn’t heard of it until recently. I made this with my grandkids except the recipe I saw had used sweetened condensed milk and vanilla (nothing else but the snow) which is what we used. It was very good but too sweet so we will tweak it next time or we may try evaporated milk and sugar like some I’ve seen.

I use canned/evaporated milk for a richer taste.
