Our HONEST Owala Water Bottle Review:
At first view, the Owala water bottles are VERY colorful. They don't have a ton of muted colors and most of their options are multi-colored. I think that's part of what makes them so fun!
NOTE – since our first review they DO have quite a few new muted colors. In fact, they have an all black one WITH a black straw I've been eyeing 🙂
The big draw for the Owala brand is the free sip lid. This unique lid allows you to either sip or swig your drink – no changing of straws, lids, no unscrewing anything – it's just all in one piece.
The Owala Freesip is great for taking on the go as the lid locks. And it locks to the point where it does. not. spill. If you have little ones or are always on the go, this water bottle can be thrown right in your bag, and as long as that lid is locked, you have nothing to worry about.
What is so special about Owala water bottles?

Are Owala bottles worth it?
After reviewing the free sip bottle, I can definitely say this water bottle has features that no other bottle holds. The lid is just fantastic if you're someone who sometimes wants to get a little more liquid in than a straw would allow, and the locking leak proof lid is a game changer. We've used this water bottle out in 95 degree heat in the summer and it does keep the liquid cold.
The only cons I have on this so far is that it IS only 24 ounces – however, they do have a larger 32 ounce available if you're looking for something that holds more liquid.
The only other con I found is that it does NOT fit in my car cup holder. Since it has a locking leak-proof system, this isn't as big of a deal as I can just throw it on my seat, but if you'd like to have a cup to fit right in your cup holder, this one might not be for you.
My friend Jamie, however, tried out this cup holder expander for some of her water bottles and it worked like a dream!
Is there a Owala 40 oz bottle?
YES! If you prefer the Stanley or the Simple Modern tumblers because of their larger 40 ounce size, you'll be SO HAPPY to know that Owala now offers a 4o ounce stainless steel tumbler. Note that it doesn't offer the free sip lid like the 24 ounce does, but the lid *IS* supposed to be spill resistant AND if you remove the straw you can take a “swig” instead of a sip. Each tumbler comes with it's own straw (color coordinated, of course!) and has a handle on the side for easy carrying. They come in a LOT of fun colors and are on sale at Amazon right now too 🙂

I absolutely love this bottle, will never use another. The sip option is great, especially whilst driving. I actually have 3 of the 32oz and 3 of the 20 oz. The 32 I Fill up for work, the 20 I leave in the cup holder in the car to use back and forth to work or running while running errands. Stays cold all day in the car! I was lucky as I found several on manager special at Kroger last summer ($5) so I grabbed them not only for myself but for family members also. I think they had trouble with the tops breaking (one of mine did) so they cleared them out. Didn’t see them for a while but they are back in a big way! Neither I or anyone I gave a bottle to had trouble with the tops, that one was the only one.
So glad that you love it! Thanks a bunch for giving us your feedback.
Thank you for sharing this water bottle! I found it because of this review! I bought a 32oz bottle from Dick’s Sporting Goods (they had an exclusive color I wanted). I also plan on buying a 24oz bottle to bring on the plane for my next trip. I am tempted to buy another for myself and to give out as gifts.
You are so welcome ~ Happy to help! 🙂
I love my Owala, I have a 32 oz that I take to work every day, I don’t like to use straws and with this bottle I don’t need to use the straw. It never leaks, and my water stay the temperature that I put into it, and the handle on the top makes it easy to carry
Owala is my favorite water bottle ever! And it fits in my cup holder. That and the sip swig option were my reasons for purchasing.
So glad to hear! 🙂
Are the bottle pretty easy for kids to handle and open?
My 8 and 11 year old needs water bottles for school and I was planning to head to Sams tomorrow any way. Wondering if these will work great for them.
We have heard really great things about the owala water bottles for kids! They have been known to not spill! Hope you love them!
Yes, they will work great for the kids. They only need to push a button on the lid for the top to spring open and for them to get their water.
I LOVE my owala! Just perfect but I do worry about the lock continuing to work for much longer as it always feels like it barely wants to clasp. I’ve had it over a year and use it every day and water stays so nice and cold so to out ice even!
Yayy ~ so glad you love yours Sarah! 🙂
I’ve only used Owala for the past two years! I have the 32 oz size which is perfect! The ice lasts all day even two! I just bought a new one at REI! My first bottle’s cap I bought two years ago just broke, but they sell replacements at a reasonable price. I’m hard on my bottles so I blame myself! While free sip is my favorite, my daughter bought me the handled one that looks like a “Stanley”. The ice will last 2-3 days in this one… this one is 40 oz and fits in cup holders, but is very heavy so I prefer to use at home.
We have had these for a year and they are the absolute best water bottles for straw use or pouring. They have held up amazingly well and we love them so much!!!
That is amazing to hear! Thanks so much for your feedback!!
We have 4 of these, and they are the best water bottles. The wide top allows us to easily add ice from our refrigerator dispenser, and the built-in straw is excellent. Other’s I’ve purchased don’t seal properly so the straws don’t work, but the Owalas work perfectly. I purchased ours at Sam’s 2 years ago, and they’ve stood the test of time. My daughter has wagged them back and forth to school with no issues. They are by far her favorite water bottles. Also, they fit nicely into the cup holders in our Toyota vehicles (24 oz). My only con is that I wish they were a bit bigger.
This is great to know, Lori! Thanks so much for the feedback! – PPP Team
I LOVE my Owala! It is the best water bottle I have had!
I recently got a 2 pack of the 24 oz Owala bottles just like this one from my local Sam’s Club for $30! Definitely a great deal. Mine were a black and a white, no crazy colors but I actually wanted a white one anyway. I’m in LOVE with these over any other bottle I’ve ever had – and we have a cabinet full of everything from cheap to Yeti. It keeps the drinks cold and I love the lid (probably why I like it so much!) I love sipping through the build in straw area (straw DOES detach on the inside to clean) or using like a water bottle and swigging. It’s amazing!
