If you're like me and are feeling like your home needs a tiny bit of fluffing after taking all the Christmas decor down, this is for you! Recently I heard the term “Coastal Grandmother” for the very first time when a decorator friend shared it, and was like “FINALLY… someone has figured out my style!”Â
(I pulled together a bunch of items at Amazon for as little as $6 that I *think* qualify as Coastal Grandmother Style. My favorites are the Rope Basket and Watercolor Canvas . . . and the spindle chair of course! DEFINITELY shop what you have first though to pull off Coastal Grandmother Style on a penny pincher budget.)
While I'm not a grandma quite yet 😊, it's like someone (mostly) pegged my style. I'm probably a little more laid back than true “Coastal Grandmother”Decor” style from what I can tell, but overall I kind of love the idea.
So if you're like me and have been hidden away too, here's an idea of what the “Coastal Grandmother Decor” (let's call it “Coastal Grandmother Chic” just for fun . . . ) kind of looks like.
At least from what I can tell . . .Â
- Lots of white
- Pops of blue or navy (think ginger jars kind of like this lamp. I had no idea what a ginger jar actually was, but there you go!)
- Woven straw bags
- Gold accents
- White cloth napkins
- Hyacinth basksets
- Coastal vibe ~ cozy beach house in the summertime
- Striped pillows
- Comfortable, stylish, timeless decor
See that white shirt right there? Clearly I'm over here living my coastal grandmother style before I even knew it was cool! Never mind that I am MISSING AN EARRING and that I safety-pinned that blouse before the photo shoot since my button popped off ~ guess I'm just a coastal-grandmother-chick-in-training but I'm okay with that!Â
Now, I'm not quite that traditional when it comes to my decor, but I do pretty much love all things white, blue and cozy. Honestly, my dream style is a little more Joanna from Texas meets Martha Stewart in the Hamptons, and while at lunch Living with Landyn and The Nester walk up. (OH MY. If I could sip some lemonade alongside those divas at a luncheon like that? Sign me up pretty please!)
Just make sure Ree shows up too. A blogger girl can dream ~ right?
Give me a little boho beach, not super stuffy look with subtle pops of blue, oodles of white, and everything soft and cozy.
(Remember my kitchen rule? It helps me keep things clean like that!)
Here's why I think I'm in love with the whole coastal grandmother decor (chic!) concept:
1. It's frugal.
Don't believe me? Here's why.
ANYthing classic (ANYthing!) will save you so much money in the long run. When we were first married (and I was just 20!), every single thing on my William's Sonoma Bridal Registry was either white or glass. (Um, there were only 3 things on that registry but all three are still Williams Sonoma Classics. I figured out way back then that if I bought something bright red or bright yellow that was trendy, it simply wouldn't stand the test of time.)
Twenty five years later, I still have a cream pajama set that I still wear as it's timeless, because it will always fit in style.
Trust me, choosing classic pieces will save you so much time, energy and money. After trying to fit in with a few other crazy trends over the years just to be “hip and trendy”, coastal grandmother style won't let you down when others might.
2. It's easy to find and cheap.
White dishes are everywhere. (Mine are from Target, but you can get them at Walmart, Sam's Club or the Dollar Tree too). White towels are easy to pick up in a pinch. A bouquet of blue hydrangeas will brighten any table, and you can even snag a rattan basket at your local Dollar General store.
Visit your local Goodwill and you'll find tons of glassware. Odds are you'll find a few ginger jars too. 🙂 If you're lucky you might find some pink Pyrex like I did once, but anything you find Coastal Grandmother Decor Style should cost you just a few dollars.
3. It's cozy.Â
I love things that feel good. I love when I step into a pair of pajamas and they fit just right. I love to cozy up with a big blanket that's exactly the right weight. I love when someone visits our home, climbs into fresh clean sheets at bedtime with a simple bedside table by their side.
Coastal grandmother chic style “feels” that way to me from what I'm reading, and there's just something warm and endearing about a mother (or grandmother's) style.
(Just for fun, go ahead listen to this podcast from Emily P Freeman on mothing someone. Everyone wants a coastal grandmother decorator in their life!)
5. My mother-in-law totally rocked that style. And I guess I'm just so glad she taught me to embrace it too.Â
Have you figured out your favorite style yet? Are you more a little more boho? Earthy? Pioneer-womanish? Modern? Hip? Or do you just love Classic Martha Stewart style?
Whatever your style is, decide what you (yes, YOU!) truly love the MOST.
Not what you love right now because it's popular, trendy, hip and on Tiktok today, but what YOU just love the very best.
Think of what YOU like. What colors, patterns and textures make YOUR heart happy. And what beckons you in because it simply makes you feel right at home.
You can see a few of my favorites over here, but decide for yourself your sense of style, and if you're able, stick to it for a wee bit of time. I'll be over here hunting down some blue hydrangeas after sipping some Crystal Light pink lemonade while thumbing through my Southern Living Magazine, and hope you find a wee bit of time in your weekend to enjoy something you love the very most too.
