Blockbuster Video was a popular video rental chain in the 1990s and early 200s, but filed for bankruptcy in 2010. However, could it be making a comeback?
Blockbuster Video (Is it coming back??)
A few days ago, the long-dormant Blockbuster.com website started working again and fans on social media started speculating that the popular video rental chain, which once had 9,000 stores nationwide, is planning something.
Is Blockbuster making a comeback?
If you grew up in the 1990s through early 2000s, you likely remember visiting the popular video rental chain with your friends or family, spending hours browsing the aisles lined with VHS boxes. There was something so fun and simple about going to Blockbuster and choosing a movie or video for the weekend! 🙂
So what's the deal with their website??
It currently displays the blue and gold Blockbuster logo with the following message on desktop – “We are working on rewinding your movie.” This messaging has a bunch of folks wondering what exactly that message implies. (Note that the site may not work if it's getting slammed with traffic).
In addition, you may want to check out the website on your phone as the mobile version shares a different message “Be kind while we rewind” – which alludes to their nostalgic slogan “Be Kind. Rewind.”
So, what's all this about?? Should we be excited??
Unfortunately, no one seems to know for sure, but the wording on their website implies all sorts of possibilities. But, before we start jumping to conclusions, it's important to note that the siting of this “new” website was first spotted back in November 2022. So maybe it's not really so new after all??
Somehow, a bunch of folks noticed it recently…and now everyone's talking!
And, Blockbuster’s website isn’t the only sign of life! Blockbuster’s Twitter feed is full of tweets about the nostalgia of choosing movies on Friday nights, financial woes, and even this witty business idea:
“New business idea: We're going to come back as a bank and use VHS and DVDs as currency. Time to go visit your mom.”
However, the Blockbuster brand has been owned by Dish Network since 2011 – so maybe they're the ones behind all the fun tweets? Unfortunately, at this time, there’s no indication whether the messages on Blockbuster.com are actually the start of something new…or just for pure nostalgic fun.
I guess we'll have to wait and see??
