Let me start with my embarrassing BEFORE bathtub…
This week I was dealing with a VERY scummy bathtub that wasn't coming clean with Dawn Powerwash or Scrubbing Bubbles.…
To make matters worse – my hubby and teen boys use Dr. Squatch Soap (it's always brown or black!) which turned the bottom of my tub grayish-black. And on top of that – as the soap slowly melts away in the corner of the tub, it leaves a BRIGHT white streak of clean-ness down the middle. (Just to highlight how bad the rest of it is!)
After asking around, several PPP readers recommended Bar Keeper's Friend as their secret weapon. I went out and got some today and WOWZA!!!
Here's what I did:
- Sprinkle water all over the surface you're about to clean
- Sprinkle Barkeeper's Friend all over the wet surface
- Dampen a scrubby sponge and rub the powder into the surface, creating a paste.
- Rinse within 1 minute of applying (important!)
I WAS AMAZED.
Soap scum that would NEVER quite come off the sides of the tub were no match.
The textured bottom of the tub FINALLY got clean thanks to the paste getting between all the little bumps.
The brown hard water stain under the faucet went away EASILY (I have honestly tried everything on that).
A couple tips:
Wear gloves, because the Oxalic acid can be harsh on your skin.
Make sure you ventilate and don't breathe in the powder before you get it wet.

Bar Keepers Friend is wonderful. I use it on my burnt pots and it is so much easier to get them clean. It is a must have in my house and I buy a bare minimum of cleaning supplies because of my allergies.
