Select Amazon Returns Coming With New Fees

If you’re a frequent-flyer when it comes to making Amazon purchases and returning them – you might want to take note!

Amazon announced in a recent press release that UPS Store Returns will no longer be free for select Amazon items.  Amazon will begin charging a $1 Fee if customers have any other free option to return an item elsewhere.  What does that mean?

If there’s a FREE RETURN option at a Whole Foods, Kohl’s or Amazon Fresh Grocery Store that’s just as close to you and you STILL choose the UPS Store option, you may incur a $1 Fee.    See more about how to make Kohl’s Amazon Returns here!   The $1 Fee will be deducted from your refund.  While this won’t be too bad on bigger items, it might start to hurt when returning smaller inexpensive items.

How to Keep Getting Get Free Amazon Returns:

1. When ordering an item on Amazon, look for “Free returns” next to the price to confirm that the item qualifies for free returns.
2. All return-eligible items, weighing under 50 lbs and sold by Amazon, have at least one free return option.
3. You can return the item for any reason in new and unused condition for up to 30 days after purchase.

Amazon will also be implementing a new way to track items that have a high-return rate and categorizing them as such.  This might help consumers avoid products that are most-often returned and subsequent return fees.

And Amazon’s not the only one…. online returns have nearly doubled since 2020 as folks became more reliant on online shopping.   This comes at a cost to retailers who have to process those returns – so several are rethinking their Free-Returns policies, as well as looking at shortening return windows.  We’ll be keeping an eye on this as we see any further signs of change!
