Dry Erase Floating Hearts

Dry Erase Floating Hearts Experiment

When you are in a Pinterest-mom mood but don’t have time for a lot of prep to make arts & crafts with your kids, this easy peasy Valentine craft is the perfect fit! We’re making Floating Hearts using dry erase markers – it requires so little set up, is relatively mess-free, and your kids can make and re-make all day.

Plus, there is a little bit of science behind the craft, so you can even add in a learning opportunity if you want to learn more about things that are water insoluble.

Dry Erase Floating Hearts – What You Need to Get Started!

All you need to make this easy Valentine craft is:

  • A dry erase marker (like these)
  • A ceramic dish or plate
  • A drinking straw (optional)
  • Water

Here’s how to do this Dry Erase floating experiment:

Start by drawing hearts on your dinner plate.

Then, pour a little water in (I learned the hard way you have to pour slowly to avoid splashing).

You’ll see the hearts begin to lift from the plate! The dry erase markers are insoluble, so they don’t dissolve in the water. And, since they erase easily and don’t adhere to surfaces, they lift from the plate to float in the water.

Finally, you can use a straw to gently blow the hearts around making them dance in the water.

Note: I noticed some of the colors I used worked better than others. You might have some trial and error with this craft, but the pink worked really well – in honor of Valentine’s Day!
