Surprise Amazon Refunds for Past Returns
Ever returned something to Amazon and then promptly forgot about it? Turns out they might owe you $$$… I just got $87 backearlier this month — find out if you did by checking your inbox ASAP!
You' ll want to search your inbox for the subject line: Information about your Amazon Order
Here's what's going on:
Following a recent internal audit, Amazon discovered that a small percentage of returns were never issued refunds because the status remained “unresolved”. In other words, they may have never issued a refund because the returned item was never marked as “received”. Impacted customers were not notified in a clear or timely way that their return/refund was rejected, and most (including me!) just assumed that the money was refunded to their accounts.
However (as their email vaguely implies) enough time has now elapsed and enough uncertainty exists that Amazon has decided to refund all those unresolved order numbers. HOORAY! Some refunds are dating back YEARS…. as far back as 2018!
My particular issue was a set of Airpods that I returned last December and I just received my $86.70 back (Finally!) PPP Team Member Kristen got $185 back!
What you need to know:
- No action needed — Refunds are automatic.
- Refunds go to your original payment method (or gift card if that’s not possible)
- Check your email for a message from Amazon (mine came without warning)
- If you're curious, go into “Your Transactions” to find a recent refund, locate your purchase date, etc
- Refunds take 3–5 business days to show up
If you are one of the impacted customers, no action is required of you, but you may want to check the email account associated with your Amazon account (or your transaction history) to see if you've received a surprise refund. Let us know in the comments if you do!
Here's what my email said:
Drop us a line and let us know if you received a refund and how far back it went!
I feel silly but where is “your transactions” located in my Amazon account?
Not a silly question, at all! When you log into your amazon account click on “account”. There will be some boxes come up on the screen, click “your payments”. At the top of the next screen you should see “transactions”. Hope that helps! 🙂
I just saw that on May 9th, I got $49.99 back from a return in 2019!
Wow, that is SO exciting, Michelle!
