Each Tuesday throughout November, Passionate Penny Pincher will highlight a charity in need this Christmas season. While some of these are local charities in North Alabama (where we’re located), I’m betting a charity in your local area is looking for similar items, so hopefully you can find a place to give in your community as well!
This week’s ministry is the Asbury United Methodist Food Pantry, which provides Holiday Food Boxes to hundreds of people across North Alabama. On November 3rd from 1-4 PM, Asbury’s Food Pantry is hosting a Family Food Box Packing Event, where volunteers will pack Holiday Food Boxes using using items from the food pantry shelves. To make sure they’re well supplied, they are looking for donations of the following items:
- Canned Tuna, Chicken, Ham or Salmon
- Canned Yams or Sweet Potatoes
- Boxed, Bagged, or Canned Potatoes
- Boxed Stuffing Mix
- Cranberry Sauce
- Macaroni & Cheese
- Cornbread Mix
- Gravy Mix (or Canned Gravy)
- Canned Fruits
- Boxed Desserts
- Applesauce
If you have even just a few of these items that you can donate to help fill those boxes, drop them off at the receptionist desk at Asbury UMC before 11/2/12. And, if you’re in another area, contact a local church to see if they’re accepting similar donations!
In addition to the Holiday Food Box Ministry at Asbury, they also provide weekend backpacks to low income children at two local schools in Madison, Alabama. They are in need of items to fill these backpacks year round, and are very low on supplies to pack backpacks right now. Here are a few examples of things they’re looking for:
- Single Serving Cereals
- Pop Top Pastas or Soups (i.e. Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup or Spaghettio’s)
- Granola or Cereal Bars
- Single Serve Fruit Cups
If you’re able, consider donating just an item or two this week to someone in need in your community ~ I promise it will make such a difference for them this Christmas season. And please (please!) don’t feel overwhelmed by the needs out there ~ I promise, if each of us do just a small part we really can have a huge impact. If each person who visitst PPP throughout the month of November donates just 2 items to charity, over 100,000 items would be donated this month alone ~ WOOHOOO! So, consider exactly where God is calling you to give, and know that your generosity will bless someone this season.
“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.” Matthew 10:42

Such a great idea! I wish more people knew how affordable it is to just give at least one time this Christmas.
