I made a quick run into Walmart this morning to grab a few gallons of milk (because usually our Publix price is as much as $.50 more expensive per gallon), and was shocked when I saw the price had gone up to $3.98. Really?
We were out of town last week, but I priced it at Sam's and Aldi two weeks ago and it was just $2.29 per gallon. Just curious if there was some crazy milk price hike that I missed, or if you all have noticed skyrocketing prices as well in the last week? Would love to hear your thoughts, and leave a comment to share what you're paying for milk in your hometown too!
My, my, my how times have changed. The gallon of whole milk that I bought this week from Meijer in Findlay Ohio was only $1.00.
Here in Alberta, Canada, I pay $4.99 for a 4 litre jug, which is the same as a gallon jug in the US I think. That’s also for 3.25%, which is about 50 cents more than 1% or 2%. But I guess if you converted that to US dollars, it’d be something like $3.70.
Milk at Aldi’s today, $1.69
Fremont, Oh
Paid $4.77 @ Walmart thought they were cheaper?!?
Paid $3.99 @ Trader Joe’s today. Guess we need a cow and chickens with egg prices too!!
Hi, I know this post is from last year, but I am trying to know how much does it cost a gallon of milk nowadays in USA.
I’m from Brazil and I am writing a blog about services and products prices in Brazil compared to other countries.
If anyone could reply, I would be grateful.
Thank you
Hi Milene! I would say between $2.50 and $3.60 depending on your area – hope that helps!
Cvs is usually the cheapest as odd as that sounds. Last night I bought a gallon of the good milk you know the one in the yellow containerfor 2.99 reg 4:12 or higher at walmart
The Walmart brand of milk was over $4 and the other brands were close to $5
I love that CNN is blaming the drought in CA for possible rise in milk prices. I live in CA and there is always a drought here! Milk is still 2.89/gal at Stater BRos
and Daniel Cormier drinks milk like there is no tomorrow. I told him it would be CHEAPER to own a cow

Wow! Our cheapest milk here in Lafayette, LA, usually runs an average of $4 per gallon depending on the store. The cheapest is usually $4.07.

Thats cheap! Here in southern MS. I had been paying $3.79 gal + tax at Kroger for a while but it went up recently to $3.99 gal. Walmart is higher, over $4. That is regular milk, organic is $5-6.99 gal + tax.
ours went up too. i went to save a lot yesterday and all of a sudden its $4.13 a gallon. i was like “geeze, i might as well shop at walmart anymore with these kind of prices.!'” think they need to change their name of the store to spend a lot. save a little.
We are allergic to dairy products and all kinds of milk we get very sick using it.
Paid $4/gal last night at Giant in Southampton, PA (near Phila) That’s about a 10 cent increase since last week. It had been around $3.89 for a long time. It kills me because we go through 2-3 gallons a week. If my kids don’t finish a glass it goes into the fridge for later!
i shop around and do not buy milk at Walmart , Walgreens has it better priced here where I live most of the time
I pay 1.99. Frys always has milk on sale. I usually stock up when I get milk.
Get ready. All our food prices are going up.
in eastern Tenn its been almost 5.00 for along time and the blizzards in the west happen every year so dead cows not a good excuse we go to central ny in the summer and its 3.00 less we have cows here why the price
I have been blessed to grow up on a farm and pay next to nothing.

If you go to an Ingels market near an Aldi the price is a good bit less. I don't like Aldi milk, it tastes funny to us, but I can get milk for around $3/gal. I asked once and the store manager told me that it was due to Aldi. They lose money on it, but we gain.

Paid $3.79 at Braums in Greenville, Tx. That represents a steady increase each week by a dime last four weeks.
it is $3.98 in NE CO not only our milk spiked but a lot of our grain items as well. Most is because of the Flood we got hit with last fall, our farmers etc got hit hard.
we drink organic milk and over here in dracut, ma it's about 3.98-4.19 depending on brand and which store you go to
I had heard this winter that the price of milk was gonna spike. We had gotten a milk cow but got rid of her right before she had her calf and had to be milked because we just weren’t prepared :(. I thought it was bad when i went to Adrian, MI Walmart the other day and milk had gone from $2.69 to $3.08 a gallon. I could not imagine it being over $4, especially since my 4 year old little girl LOVES milk. I have a 16 month old sone but he’s not as crazy about it. We still go through about a gallon and a half a week.
I paid $4.50 for a gal yesterday here in NE
We are active duty military stationed in Germany, at our commissary we pay $3.48 for 1/2 gallon (generic brand)!
Wow Amanda – thanks for putting it into perspective!
I paid 5.49 for one gallon lastnight at target, here in Hawaii
$4.92 in Louisiana for generic brands!
We have been buying milk at Kroger, we got it free when we purchased 4 breakfast bars. We also buy it at CVS when it’s 2.99 and we use our EBC to pay for it. You can also buy milk at the Dollar Tree for a dollar. When we have our grand kids visit , I buy 1 gallon of milk, I have a clean empty milk container, I put half milk in each container and then fill both containers up with water. The kids cannot tell the difference and we end up with 2 gallons of milk for the price of one!
4.50 + here in Jacksonville FL ……. Walmart jumped .50 cents within a week …. we have cut out milk altogether except for cooking needs or coffee ….. water and juices have replaced the 'gold' white liquid we cannot nor we will any longer purchase as before, which was a gallon a day!
I buy Raw milk now, and pay $6 a gallon for some AWESOME milk! but when I did buy regular milk I would never pay more than $3 a gallon, I saw Aldi had it for 1.99 2 weeks ago. I am in Omaha, NE.
this was an interesting article for me. the comments also!!!!!!!!!!!! I am married to a dairy farmer in VA & for the past 5 years we have been paid next to nothing for the milk & have barely survived, but we did Praise the Lord. we are excited to being paid alittle more for the product we produce!!!!!!!!!!
We go to Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy and it is $3.25 a gallon 🙂
My experience is that Walmart milk is always a bad deal, consistently much higher that Sam’s and Aldi. I do buy plenty of other things there, though, on price-match from other stores.
Here in Phoenix, AZ, Fry’s (aka Kroger) has milk for $1 per half-gallon. Typically the price hovers between $2.00-$2.50 regularly. Occasionally as low as $1.75/gallon. We have “milk wars” to entice shoppers. We were hard hit when the economy turned south. I think our gasoline is cheaper here as well.
2.99 is as cheap as it gets around here, NE Iowa and that is at Kwik Star right now running a special.
…And Walmart is supposed to be cheaper than other stores and have such great prices?? I never go to walmart..not worth it.. because I can usually get more of a selection and better price at our grocery stores, and even Dollar Tree or Family Dollar…
Kroger has is 2 for $5.00 but you have to buy the 2 to get the price. Not a problem in my household though.
Ours usually range from $3.58 to $3.78 at Walmart here in EastTennessee.
Ours has been around $4 for awhile at walmart and Publix. Walgreens normally always has it $3.
Im in northern Colorado each Wednesday the sales ad comes out last week I found milk for $ 1.88 a gallon…it is on sale some where in town each week, the most ive spent has been $ 2.29.
In MN it is $2.50 at Aldi and about $2.89 at Kwik Trip & Target for the store brands. Kemps runs around $3.59 a gallon.
Oddly enough I just checked the price of milk while shopping yesterday. It’s 2.99 at BJ’s and 3.74 at Publix in Cumming, Ga. I think I’d die if it was 6!
I’m in mid-Missouri. Grocery store prices are up to almost $4.50/gal for 2%. I can get it at Aldi’s for about a dollar less. Walgreens is cheaper than grocery stores but still more than Aldi’s price. I don’t see prices going down any time soon!!!!!
I usually buy milk at Aldi in Greenville, SC. I think it’s been around $3.39 for a while. I prefer the taste of their milk, too. I got milk at Target last week with Cartwheel and Ibotta offers, but shelf price was $4.29! I think it ended up costing me $3.07. Does Costco sell individual gallons or are they sold in a 2 gallon pack? I live alone and could never use up 2 gallons!
Hey Lauren costco sells individual gallons .
Found this on NBC news website, apparently the drought in California is one of the reasons milk and other dairy is going up.
“The current California drought, however, is the bad news. Without relief, production of alfalfa, a key feed for cows, could be curbed, pushing up milk prices even higher in late 2014 and early 2015”
$5.98 for Organic Harvest Farms at Ingles last night. $3.49 for non-organic Ingles brand.
Some weeks CVS or Walgreens run a special on milk to get you in the store
The October blizzard in SD killed many cattle. So both dairy and beef prices are rising. The devastation was great.
Wow, people! We live on an island in Alaska where the milk comes in on a barge and we still never pay more than $3.48 a gallon. Something is seriously wrong down there! Blizzards have nothing to do with it. we just moved from dairy country in Idaho and I can guarantee the dairies are doing just fine. They are the only ones buying new trucks every year during a recession.
Our grocery stores have it for about $3.79-$3.99. Aldi's was $3.09. Crazy!!!
Just paid 3.88 for 2% in Scottsboro, Al.
I was paying for a gallon of milk $3.29 but it went up to $3.49 is still a great price grocery store cost more then $4.50. So I get in a gas station around the corner of my house. I got kids and my husband all drink a lot of milk not me though only on cereal.
The blizzards killed a LOT of dairy cows. You are going to see it go up again before it goes down.
Wow
The nearest grocery store for us is New Town, ND. We pay 5.99 a gallon.
I normally buy my milk at Aldi, and it’s been $2.99/gallon. This week it was priced at $3.09, so milk prices do seem to be going up in my area too : ( My Publix used to be $3.79, I think. But this week it was $4.19 for a gallon — good thing I got it for free with the cereal deal : )
Palm Harbor (Tampa Bay), Florida
It’s $4.38 at my local Wal-Mart in Magnolia, Arkansas, and has been for some time. If I ever find it on sale, it’s $3.99. I haven’t seen milk under $3.99 in a long time!
It is around $2.39 a gallon here, but I live in the dairy state (WI) and it is cheaper generally. What I am shocked by is the price of dried milk in the boxes! That has gone up exponentially!
Just picked up a gallon at lunch today for $1.79 at Aldies, Three Rivers Michigan. 🙂
$4.19 at my Walmart in West Palm Beach, Fl… But CVS has it on sale this week for $2.99
I’m in Greenville SC area and milk had been around 399 for well over a year sometimes higher .Costco stays around 299 .
I would love pay $3.98 for a gallon of milk. It is $4.89 at my Publix in south Florida.
$4.19 a gallon here in Jacksonville, FL at Publix. $3.49 a gallon at BJs.
