Perfect High-Protein Breakfast (And Why I’m Loving It!)

If you’ve been here long at all you know that I’m constantly working on ways to eat better and prioritize my health, and this has been one of my happiest wins this year!

Recently, I chatted with a nutritionist, and one of the biggest things she encouraged me to do was to prioritize protein first thing in the morning, especially after working out. She explained that getting a protein-rich breakfast within about an hour of exercise can help support muscle recovery, keep you feeling full longer, and give you more steady energy throughout the day. It made so much sense that I decided to give it a try.

I honestly wasn’t expecting to love it this much.

It’s warm, filling, packed with protein, and keeps me satisfied for hours (which means I’m way less tempted to grab random snacks at 10:00 a.m.!)

Here’s what’s been on repeat almost every morning:

My Favorite High-Protein Breakfast

  • 1/2 cup egg whites
  • 1 slice Canadian bacon
  • 1 Light Laughing Cow Garlic & Herb cheese wedge
  • A handful of spinach
  • 1/4 cup low-fat cottage cheese
  • 1 low-carb tortilla (70 calories, 6g protein)
  • everything but the bagel seasoning, salt & pepper to taste

I cook the egg whites with the spinach, stir in the cottage cheese, add the Canadian bacon, then spread the tortilla with the laughing cow cneese and wrap it all up. It’s creamy, cheesy, filling, and honestly feels like a treat.

And because no morning is complete without it…

coffee with frother

I pair it with a big cup of coffee topped with lots of frothy skim milk (about 1/2 cup). On a perfect day I eat it while having my quiet time shortly after I’ve tidied up our house and gotten a workout in, and it’s maybe my favorite little routine these days.

The whole breakfast comes in at roughly:

  • Around 300 calories, including coffee
  • About 34 grams of protein

For me, that’s been an easy way to start the day feeling a wee bit more fueled and less hungry.

I still do fast a few days a week, but since I wake up at 4:30 (and go to bed early!) eating breakfast between 7 and 7:30 most days and not eating past 6:30 PM is really working for me.

If you have a favorite high-protein breakfast, I’d love to hear about it! I’m always looking for new ideas (and of course, using our Low Carb Menu Plans  most of the time, and naturally make staying on track a wee bit easier!)
