Ashley P.'s Gabb Review:
We definitely didn't take buying a phone lightly. Gone are the days of having JUST a phone to call a friend on – but this Gabb phone is pretty close! There are days where I envy that we grew up with the phone attached to the wall with a 4 ft reach. We have a super super social child who truly loves her friends deeply and when summer hit this year we knew we needed a safe way for her to keep in contact with friends/family.
We originally let her use our phones BUT quickly realized my phone gives her access to social media, internet, explicit music/music videos, doesn't filter messages … the list goes on and on. She had way too much access. Her friends and family are SO important to her so I obviously want her to be able to talk to them but that's all she reallllly needed. She also couldn't take our phone with her when she was with the sitter or at a friends. We wanted her to be empowered to get a hold of us if she needed to. So here are the top features I love about the Gabb Phone:
- Control of contacts – we get to decide who gets added to the phone
- Filtering of messages – they filter out inappropriate messages before it even gets to them
- Message requests – it can be set to allow them to get messages from someone they don't know only IF it is appropriate. If someone they don't know sends an image, that image doesn't show until you add the person to their contacts.
- No access to internet/social media
- Parent approved apps – you install apps from the parent login
- Clean music access – no music videos, no explicit music
- Affordable – We pay $40 a month for this phone line
- Parent app (on my phone) – allows me to see her location, get notified if she is sending something questionable, see if the phone needs charged, play a sound to find the phone, call or message directly.
One tip that I will share that we have been doing is when we are home we treat it more like a home phone. She can be on it when she is actively talking to a friend or actively texting but otherwise it has a little “home” spot. The exception is if she is crafting and wants to listen to music. It helps give some balance to being on a device but still being able to talk to her friends. Much like when we had a phone attached to a wall. 🙂 I love that we can teach about healthy phone and communication habits without having the world at her fingertips. She has access to calling/texting us throughout the workday when she is with the sitter or ability to contact us if she is at a friends or family members house. We also love that she has easy access to call for help if needed.
Ashley L.'s Gabb Review:
We love this company!! Gabb wireless is great for kids without having to introduce them world of social media. We have the watch but my kiddos are begging to upgrade to the phone. The Gabb watch has phone, text and voice messaging. It also had GPS tracking, step counter, emergency notification and much more! We pay around $12.99 per month – but it really depends on which plan you sign up for and which device you have.
How much does Gabb wireless cost?
For the Gabb Phone – there are plans as low as $24.99/month with a 2-year contract, or $29.99 with no contract.
For the Gabb Watch 3 – the plan is $9.99/month with 2 year contract, $12.99 for 1 year, and $16.99 for the no contract plan!
