Food Pantry Birthday Cake Kit
If you're looking for a great way to give back to your community as a family, I have the perfect idea for you! These food pantry birthday cake kits are thoughtful, practical, and a great way to get kids involved in volunteering.
I am so blessed to have not had to worry about how I'm going to make a cake for a family birthday, but there are so so many families out there who unfortunately can't say the same. Imagine just scraping by with your bills and one of your kids has a birthday on the tightest week you've experienced.
Enter: food pantry birthday cake kits.
With just a few items put together, you can donate a “birthday in a box” to your local food pantry. The recipient is then able to make and frost an entire cake, light the candles, and their family has a happy birthday!
My kids loved helping put together these kits (there was only one or two comments about wishing we could have cake right now ) and taking them to our food bank.
The best part is that this food pantry birthday cake kit doesn't require any additional ingredients like eggs or oil. Did you know one can of Sprite acts as 2 eggs + oil for a boxed cake mix?! So cool!
What you'll need:
You can include just a few staple items in your birthday cake kit to make it complete. There is always the option to include more, so I'll put some ideas below if you want to add some extra touches .
- Boxed cake mix
- Can of frosting
- One can of Sprite soda
- 9×13″ disposable cake pan
- Birthday candles
- A note for how to use the Sprite
You can stop there and they'll have a great birthday! If you feel like adding anything else, some extras might be:
- Party plates
- A small package of balloons
- Decorations (like a gift bow or banner)
- Birthday card
- A note or picture from your kids (my little artists love to create pictures for others!)

How to make a birthday cake kit for the food pantry:
This is the fun part! If you're making a big batch or have lots of helping hands, you can set up a sort of assembly line to fill the kits. Everything goes into the 9×13″ disposable pan.
Fill the larger items first and then add small items on top like the candles.
That's it! Once you've added everything, wrap the whole kit well with plastic wrap. I added a little bit of curling ribbon on the top for one final extra touch.
Note: some food pantries may require the kits to be assembled on-site so they can verify the contents. You can contact your local pantry to confirm ahead of time. Most will allow your family to come in and assemble there!
Creating these kits is great for families or a service project for Scouts, Youth Groups, and more! Plus, if you don't have funds for a multiple kits, creating just one is enough! It's an opportunity to have the conversation with your kids about your community either way.
I'd love to hear your ideas for getting your whole family involved in volunteering & donating!
