Urgent: Nearly 2 Million Dozen Eggs Recalled for Salmonella Risk

Time to check your fridge as a major import alert has just been issued! California-based August Egg Company is recalling 1.7 million dozen (that's more than 20 million eggs!) after a multistate Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak has made at least 79 people sick – including 21 who were hospitalized.

The FDA and CDC are actively investigating the outbreak. Affected eggs are being removed from stores or sent for pasteurization. August Egg Co. has paused shipments and is reviewing its processes to prevent future incidents.

Why the Recall?

The recall stems from a Salmonella outbreak traced back to eggs processed at the August Egg Co. facility in Hilmar, California. Symptoms of Salmonella include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, often starting 12–72 hours after exposure.

What You Should Do

1. Check your fridge for affected cartons with codes P‑6562 or CA5330.
2. Discard or return any matching cartons—do not consume them.
3. Clean and disinfect any surfaces that came into contact with the eggs.
4. Watch for symptoms and contact your doctor if needed—especially for vulnerable individuals like children or the elderly.
