Make This DIY Pumpkin Flower Arrangement
Hey there – Laura, here! If you're looking for a way to really WOW your guests this Thanksgiving or add some fresh flowers to your fall decor, I cannot recommend this DIY pumpkin flower arrangement enough!
With gorgeous fall flowers and a pretty fairytale pumpkin, this “vase” adds so much elegance to your table without a huge cost or time spent.
Here's how to make your own and some of my tips and tricks for a successful DIY.
This DIY pairs perfectly with these adorable fall flower cupcakes!
Supplies needed
- Fresh pumpkin – I grabbed the “Fairytale” variety at Trader Joe's but they have these all over in different, fun colors
- Fresh flowers – I also grabbed these from Trader Joe's because you can get pretty high quality bouquets for $4-$5 a piece. I went with a fall variety of mums, a Eucalyptus bunch for my greenery, and spray roses to add some variety.
- Floral foam OR a bowl/vase – I originally grabbed wet floral foam (you soak it in water and stick the flowers into it) but decided mid-project to use a shallow Tupperware container that fit perfect inside my pumpkin.
- A sharp, serrated knife
- Floral shears
- Optional: Scotch tape or floral tape
How to make a Pumpkin Vase
Start by picking a pumpkin in your desired size. I am making large centerpiece but plan to make tiny, place-setting version using baby pumpkins for Thanksgiving as well.
You want to look for a pumpkin that sits nice and flat, and isn't too tall and is wide enough to cut a circle for the flowers. The one I found was about 9″ tall from base to stem.
Next, you'll cut a hole in the top and remove the stem like you're carving a jack-o-lantern. I learned the hard way that these fairytale pumpkins seem to be a lot thicker and sturdier than regular pumpkins so this really took some muscle. (Maybe it's just the one I picked? Let me know if you try it!)
Smooth out the edges and remove all those yucky innards and seeds. I used a spoon to smooth the inside a bit, making an even surface for my Tupperware to sit it.
If you're using floral foam, you can sit this directly into the pumpkin or in a bowl first. Because I'm using a Tupperware like a vase, I set up a floral grid (a trick I learned for making A+ floral arrangements) so that each stem has somewhere to sit.
I used Scotch tape to make a grid across my Tupperware, filled it with water, and gently sat it inside my pumpkin.
Now comes the really fun part – placing your flowers! Use floral shears like these to trim the stems to the length you need.
Start by placing your greenery stems around the entire pumpkin creating kind of a halo or wreath. Then, start stickin'! I did my mums first since they're the biggest and did one color at a time, placing sporadically throughout and at various lengths of stems.
Finally, I finished with my spray roses as the finishing touch.
I am just SO happy with how this DIY pumpkin flower arrangement turned out! This will make such an elegant Thanksgiving table with overall so little effort from me.
This flower arrangement would also make a wonderful hostess gift if you're attending a fall gathering or Friendsgiving.
This is very pretty- and perfect for the season. Must try, but since I’m in Hawaii, I’ll be using different flowers.
