These DIY baked goods make such a big impression because they look complicated but they're actually super easy to make, just a little time consuming!
These fall flower cupcakes use marshmallows to create a fun design and shape that replicates our favorite fall flowers – mums and sunflowers. These cupcakes are perfect for fall parties, gifting, or to make with your kids just for fun.

Ingredients for Fall Flower Cupcakes
- Baked cupcakes (you can bake from scratch or use a box mix and bake according to package – I used a Spice Cake for fall!)
- Frosting
- Sanding sugar sprinkles (for fall colors I grabbed red, orange, yellow, and gold)
- Mini marshmallows
- Oreos
How to make shaped marshmallow cupcakes
Bake cupcakes according to recipe or package directions. Let cool completely before frosting.
Baking note: you need flat-ish cupcakes for this design to really thrive. My cupcakes rose a TON and turned out a little dome shaped so I had to pick the flatter ones and cut the tops a little bit. I asked my sister who is a baker how to fix this and she recommended less batter per cupcake and to bake at a lower temperature for a few extra minutes.
Start by frosting all of your cupcakes with your chosen flavor of frosting. I would recommend a white frosting to match the marshmallows, but if you really love chocolate just go for it!
For the Mums:
Pour your sanding sugar sprinkles onto a plate or bowl. Less is more – you don't need to pour a ton and you can always add more.
Cut your mini marshmallows in half diagonally using kitchen scissors. Cut enough marshmallows for 1-2 cupcakes at a time so they don't dry out. Press the sticky side (where you cut) down into the sprinkles, wiggling a little bit to get it covered. Place the non-sprinkle side onto the cupcake.
To get an even circle, I put four “anchor” marshmallow petals around the cupcake in even positions (like a clock, I placed them at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 hours) and then filled in between my anchor points. Make a complete ring around the cupcake and repeat in circles towards the center. You want your petal rings to overlap a little bit to really look like a full Mum.
If you're taking your cupcakes to a party, this is a great carrier that holds up to 2 dozen cupcakes for travel!
For the Sunflowers:
Cut and dip the marshmallows like above into your yellow sprinkles. Make one ring of petals around the cupcake leaving an empty circle in the middle. Then, separate an Oreo cookie and place the non-icing side in the middle of the cupcake to make the center of the flower.
(Bonus: eat the other half of the Oreo as a little pre-cupcake snack)
I am SO pleased with how these DIY fall flower cupcakes turned out! All the fall colors just make my heart happy.
