As we head into winter, it's a good idea to think about a car emergency kit. Our readers had some great ideas of items to add!
DIY Car Emergency Kit
Several months ago, we asked our readers in our Facebook group if they kept any kind of car emergency kit with them. The ideas that we got were amazing and we wanted to pull all of those ideas into one spot for you.
It's easy to think you'll never need an emergency kit, but between snow, rain, car accidents and more, you're never sure if or when you might be stranded for several hours in your vehicle.
What should a car emergency kit have?
The National Safety Council has a great list of practical items that most people would think of for an emergency kit.
Here are some lesser known items that our readers suggested to add to your kit:
- toilet paper
- large gallon size storage bags
- large disposable cup
- carpet remnants or cardboard pieces (for traction)
- spare hat, gloves, and scarf
- mini diaper bag with extra supplies
- votive candle and matches
- change of clothes
- extra shoes and socks
- small shovel
- jump start box
- whistle
- glow sticks
- garbage bag
- space blanket
Emergency Tool Kit for Car
It's also a good idea to have a tool kit for your vehicle as well. This deluxe tool kit from Amazon has nearly every type of tool you might need in an emergency.
What other ideas do you have to include in these car kits? I'm sure this will vary a bit by season and even area of the country. Leave a comment if you have any other unique ideas to add to the list!

I would add a rain poncho and a tarp.
