Decluttering at the Speed of Life
Looking to get a FRESH start in the new year? I have a book recommendation for you!

- If you battle clutter and the tendency to “Save” things you don't use anymore “just in case” – you need this book.
- If cleaning your house is super difficult because of all the things you have to move around or find a “home” for – you need this book.
- If you're just sick and tired of the messy piles of “stuff” everywhere – you need this book!
Jamie here – and I'm a clutter collector in a BIG way. AND I LOVE THIS BOOK.
I can't recommend it enough for getting you out of a rut – and the author (Dana) is funny and super down to earth. It's an enjoyable, not-at-all preachy read that you'll want to pass on to friends when you finish! It made me realize where some of my clutter-keeping tendencies come from (growing up with very little) and gave me permission to let things go.
It also gave me the momentum I needed – every time I read another 10 pages, I got rid of another few things.
- Waffle maker I have only used once? GONE!!
- Leftover Carpet from a roll we had installed years ago? GONE!!
- Yellow robot sheets sets the boys used as kids but would never use again? GONE!!
- Old Vacuum that barely works but I kept it around as a spare anyway? GONE!!
- “Big or Small” clothes for whenever I may one day gain/lose a lot of weight? GONE!!
(Well most of the things – but I kept one or two favorites because honestly I'm a weight-fluctuator)
Over a few months I took probably 25 garbage bags of stuff to the thrift store and I was able to carve out space to ENJOY MY HOME again.
Let me know if you've read this book (or another one that helped and motivated you!) – I'd love to hear your opinion!

She has a great podcast! You can listen while decluttering!

I have read all the books and watched all the things. I’m an organized hoarder. Dana speaks my language. All the other minimalists and sparking joy people are great, but none ever really seemed to understand me like Dana. It is such a relief knowing that I’m obviously not the only one who struggles with clutter and her ‘container’ concept and deslobification processes make sense to me. I can’t recommend this book enough.

I love that this has been so helpful for you! 🙂

“Deslobification” owns me!

After living in the same house over 40 years and raising our family, it was time to downsize. This book helped me keep perspective when trying to figure out what to part with one container at a time. Definitely worth reading (and maybe again ‘when’ you get sidetracked). After moving, I felt confident to pass the book on to someone else who had been wanting to declutter!

So glad this book was so helpful to you! And how sweet of you to pass it on to someone else. 🙂

Just a heads up – it’s only free for Kindle if you have Kindle Unlimited. If not, it’s $9.99.

I love this book! I actually downloaded the Audio book and listen to it when I’m decluttering, doing laundry, etc. her humor is wonderful and the way to look at things is broken down in an easy and non-offensive way. I can’t recommend it enough!

I loved this one! I also really liked “Unf*ck Your Habitat” … it’s a bit crass but it’s real talk and definitely a motivational “you got this” vibe!

Also check our your public library app…just found it on there and placed a hold! Free!

I love Dana’s books and her no-mess method! I preordered her new book that will be released on January 10, 2022–“Organizing for the Rest of Us.”. Excited to see what new wisdom she has to share.

So glad you enjoy her books Sarah! 🙂

I love Dana’s books. I have a chronic illness that prevents me from keeping my home the way I’d like (say hey fellow spoonies!). Her suggestions about decluttering without making a bigger mess have helped me look at what I can do rather than the impossibly huge task I see before me.
Her book, “How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind: Dealing with Your House’s Dirty Little Secrets” presents the basics of how to keep your home going (and not just constantly getting worse). I may not be able to do everything everyday but I know what to to do when I can and what to ask my family to do just to cover the basics.
Dana’s books gave me hope that my home can improve by taking baby steps towards better even with my limitations.
Jenni says
Diann, this comment has sold me on this book. I too am a spoonie with a chronic illness. It sounds like Dana is the encouragement I need that I CAN keep my home tidy and organized, maybe not perfectly, but contentedly. Thank you!
Bobbie says
I’m a spoonie as well. This gives me hope for reading this book! I think I’ll get it!

We’re cheering for you! 🙂

Thank you for sharing! I’m a spoonie too! Plus I have ocd and adhd. Sometimes they work well together and other times not at all. With the fatigue and pain of lupus I have a lot of times said if it can’t be perfect then I’m not doing anything. That just added to the clutter. I’m getting these books!

I am a spooning too. I have a couple medical problems that keep me from being able to clean my house to my satisfaction. I have RSD and another nerve disease plus I’m handicapped. The pain in my arms, hands, and shoulders is excruciating at times and my legs too but I keep going and I’m going to get her books to read as I can’t stand clutter or paper but my hubby keeps every piece of paper he gets even the empty envelopes (ahhhh) and I can’t stand his mess. Maybe he needs to read the book. I can’t wait to get it now from Amazon. Thankyou for the recommendation.

This book has changed my life this year for the better!

It’s a great book! Dana is so relatable — she doesn’t make you feel like an idiot for struggling with clutter and organization. Her “container principle” has been literally revolutionary for my thinking, and I am passing it along to my kids when we make decisions about their things. Highly recommend!!

Reading it now and it is great!
