Top Amazon School Supplies Deals

Curious if you can score any great deals on school supplies at Amazon

While I don’t think you’ll save money by purchasing everything there – Amazon is a good place (you just can’t beat some of the crazy back to school sales at office supply and big box stores!), I do think there are a few ways to save big on back to school shopping at Amazon!  Amazon usually has good deals on the following: BULK School Supplies or SPECIALTY School Supplies (not to mention laptops and batteries!).

Here are the best Amazon Back to School deals we spotted this week:

Pencils

Pens

Mechanical Pencils

Crayons

Glue

Markers / Highlighters

Colored Pencils

Wite Out

Calculators

Miscellaneous

Want to save more on Back to School?  Here are some TOP items to watch for on sale at Amazon:

graphing calculator

1. High end calculators (especially graphing calculators for middle and high school kids.)

I always do a quick price check on my phone before ordering, but have almost always found better prices on Amazon than anywhere else on graphing calculators or other more expensive gadgets my kids need for school.

PicMonkey Collage

2. Glue sticks, crayons, art supplies, & more (as long as they’re on sale!)

Amazon frequently has deep discounts on Crayola, however if you just shop Amazon without any general idea of a good price you can easily spend too much. Since Amazon has a tendency to inflate their “regular” prices, you need to be sure to have our free Stock Up Price Cheat Sheet in hand to compare if you’re getting a really good deal.

Amazon does occasionally deeply discounts large quantities of back to school supplies (like they did recently on Elmer’s glue sticks.) If you’re a teacher or have several kiddos at home, using Amazon is a convenient way to take advantage of these sales so you can simply stock up!

3. Office supplies.

If you need a stapler, desk organizer, or any other basic office supply to get your kids ready for back to school, it’s worth taking a minute to check out the pricing at Amazon.

When I’m shopping for these items, I’ll do a quick search on Amazon and then on Walmart so I have a general idea of what I should be paying for these items. If Amazon has a decent price on them and it saves me a trip to Walmart, I’ll usually take advantage of their savings!

backpacks

4. Backpacks.

If you’re looking for a specific back pack for your child, definitely check out Amazon. It’s best to have a general idea of what your child wants and what the price is on those, so take a little time to compare prices and see if Amazon offers you the best deal!

5. Lunch box stuff.

If you’re looking for a certain water bottle, thermos, storage container, or lunch box, Amazon can be a great place to start. I’ve also found great prices on these at TJMaxx, so it may be worth doing a little shopping to find a great deal on these!

open textbook

6. Text books for college students as well as summer reading.

I think it would be worth doing some research at Amazon to compare the prices of their books there compared to the college bookstore. From what I’ve read their prices do compare (and beat) local bookstores, and using Amazon to purchase used versions of summer reading books is a great way to save.

Did you know that college students can get FREE 6 months of Amazon Student?! You’ll enjoy all the perks of Amazon Prime, including free 2-day shipping, movie streaming, and more!

My honest thoughts on shopping Amazon for school supplies? You need to do your research.

There are some items that you can really save on at Amazon, and doing a little research before purchasing will help ensure you’re getting the best deal (and making the best use of your time!)

I personally recommend that one figures out how often and how much one will use of office/school supplies found at Dollar Tree such as their preferred sticky notes and then consider the added cost of credit card interest rates should it be brought in bulk for save a few dollars for the year — unless can pay for it with cash. An added bonus to buying them as needed at one’s local Dollar Tree is that only having a linited supply on hand will help one use them modestly vs. carelessly. Yes, of course, buying local will not only keep Dollar Tree in business but keep them selling them, which helps those on more strict/tighter budgets, which might not even be able to purchase bulk for various reasons.

Be careful with dollar tree / dollar store products. The quality is not the same. For example, most of the products are made by Jot, and they are far less quality. Sticky notes (of which I bought many packs each for my three kids to go back to school with) barely stick to the page. I went back to Amazon and saved money over staples, and sanity as well (I use a ton of sticky notes). Also, their paper is not smooth in their notebooks. My daughter is very particular about her paper and notebooks, and won’t use the dollar tree notebooks because the paper is so thin, you get a lot of ghosting and bleed through.
However, if you can find name brands at the dollar tree, you’re fine.
